With regard to COVID, we are awash in unreliable or even intentionally misleading empirical claims. A neurosurgeon from D.C. who understands statistics analyzes a popular claim that is being made on behalf of mask mandates.
I encountered a Washington Post figure making its way through social media, suggesting that not wearing masks is conclusively the reason for COVID spread:

They reduce the volume and the range of respiratory droplets expelled from an infected individual. You can choose to disbelieve physics even as the evidence is staring you in the face, but reality continues unabated.
LOL
“viruses which are smaller than the wavelength of visible light.”

I should know the physical qualities of light, but I had to look that up. You’re correct - visible light is approx 10x larger. Learn sumthin new every day.
I wonder how many of those who have Covid or have not contracted it-— have been taking Vitamin D.
Some places are insistent that you cannot wear a surgical plastic face shield, it has to be a cloth type mask over nose and mouth. In a few weeks I am taking a flight, booked a long time ago, to a destination that requires I get proof of a negative covid test. I had 2 negative tests already for different reasons, now I gotta go again and pay out of pocket to get written proof. But I am not looking forward to having to wear a cloth mask for 7 or 8 hours (airport time + flight time + rental car wait time etc). I am looking for ways to add some type of shim to the mask, to it to let air flow. I do not believe prolonged mask use is good for oxygen levels and if everyone on the plane is tested and the plane well sanitized, it would seem the risk is quite low of contracting the disease on a plane.
I saw video that a fight broke out on a plane because a man refused to wear a mask. He wore a face shield. Crazy you’d think that if you were afraid of the virus you wouldn’t want to get into a brawl with anyone. Instead the brawlers jumped into the fray simply because he didn’t wear the appropriate type of mask, without considering social distancing. Says a lot about how people think.
I don't think you are.
What you said is 100% correct. Washing your hands with soap and water will do more in stopping a virus than a mask!
So very sorry for your loss!
Q: Do Masks Work?
A: Is the Pope Catholic?
Some end up in the mask itself. Some end up on the floor.
"how far is that from the entry back into your system?"
Not particularly relevant. A droplet from your own body that's in a mask on your face or on the floor is no threat to you.
"why was the human body designed to cough?"
To clear the throat of foreign objects and as a reaction to irritants and allergens.
"mask wearing is actually more dangerous than anyone is letting on."
Doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, painters, carpenters, contractors, architects, janitorial staff working with certain cleaning chemicals, people who work in laboratories, firefighters, factory workers, and others have been wearing masks for work every single day for decades. Haven't heard of a single one of them dying because of it. But suddenly now my lungs are going to collapse if I put a piece of cloth over my face? Absurd.
"how much protection does a mask provide on someone who is not sick?"
Depends what you mean by "sick", because 40% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 will show no symptoms at all and another 40% will show mild symptoms easily mistaken for a cold or allergies. So around 80% of people infected wouldn't even know they are infected. When you say "sick", if you're only talking about the people who need medical care, that's leaving out a whole lot of people who are infected, but not feeling badly.
Wearing a mask while indoors in a public place is a minimal cost, zero risk, minimal effort way to reduce the risk of transmission. I will always and forever be against government mandates (I'm also against mandates for seat belts and motorcycle helmets), but that doesn't mean I don't think it's a good idea. I'm not going to hassle anyone who makes a different choice, but it's clear that if we all chose to wear a mask when appropriate (as President Trump has said himself multiple times), that would help improve the situation by reducing transmission. The goal with that would be to prevent transmission to those who are vulnerable (including the obese, which is about 43% of Americans, everyone over 70 years old, everyone with cancer, everyone with AIDS, etc.) until a vaccine can be deployed to inoculate everyone.
“Washing your hands with soap and water will do more in stopping a virus than a mask!”
One of the ladies at our annual quilting retreat is a physician. She said that soap is preferable, but washing for a longer time is effective if you don’t have soap.
I have been taking Vitamin D. Not sure if the quantity is appropriate but I had been taking it anyway. Along with other vitamins and supplements.
I am wondering how much weight the average person might have gained during this lockdown. Sitting around eating chips and pretzels and watching TV for months on end can’t be good. The unintended consequences (some of which others have mentioned - alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, depression, loss of motivation/inspiration, lack of other healthcare intervention etc) of this are incalculable. I admit, I was drinking much more than I normally did for a few months. But I recognized it and decided to give that up - at least for now. I’m not joining AA or anything - I could catch covid at a meeting. :-)
Sorry to hear.
Lost my Mom to Covid in April.
How old was she? Any underlying conditions?
Masks reduce the risk of getting Covid
—
There is absolutely no data proving that claim - its an assumption based on the fallacy; masks restrict oxygen intake while concentrating virus particles in the wearer’s lungs. Further, only N95 - N99 masks can stop a covid 3 micron particle and are one use and throw away. All other masks are just a political statement.
Washing your hands and not touching your face do more to reduce the risk of contracting viruses then stupid un-sealable cloth masks or bandanas.
Cases are increasing in areas where things are opening up. Masks might help, but I havent heard much hard evidence that they are a game changer.
Those face shields are a scam. On Amazon, they cost $19 and replacement plastic at $22 for a 21 pack. The only problem with them is they are only protect from incoming droplets.
I believe wearing the mask for extended periods enhances the warm, moist environment for the virus to incubate. Personally, if I get it, I will probably get over it.
Quite simply, a person who is not sick, has NEVER been deemed in need of vector control. Well until now that is.
This whole thing is absurd.
Masks on well people are nothing more than a trap for the normal things the body expels. The body is expelling for a reason, keeping it around for the next breath is counterproductive to say the least.
“And again... if thats true why are cases going up in areas requiring masks be worn?”
Does it have anything to do with increased testing?
What your picture shows is that virtually nothing is going further than 1 meter, and certainly not further than 2 meters. In Arizona, staying 3-6 feet apart is just considered politeness. I don’t want to live closer than 3 feet from my fellow man.
Oh...and around here, we generally cover our coughs and sneezes, and don’t spend a lot of time roaming around WHILE needing to cough and sneeze around others!
