Evangelical thinker, author, and Christian pastor John Piper stirred the Christian community and a larger public intrigued with how Christians may vote in the this election with his recent essay, Policies, Persons, and Paths to Ruin: Pondering the Implications of the 2020 Election.
Piper concludes: I will not develop some calculus to determine which path of destruction I will support. After rejecting the sin of boastfulness with a terminology diagnosed in the Greek with the term eristikos, he is willing to forswear voting on or in the Presidential election of 2020. Pipers critique of leadership character is one of several made by other major evangelical thinkers like Max Lucado and Beth Moore. Pipers thesis cannot be reconciled to the rhetoric and arguments of basic Biblical hermeneutics.
Piper complains early in the essay: I find it bewildering that Christians can be so sure that greater damage will be done by bad judges, bad laws, and bad policies than is being done by the culture-infecting spread of the gangrene of sinful self-exaltation, and boasting, and strife-stirring (eristikos). How do they know this? Seriously! Where do they get the sure knowledge... Piper is condescendingly stunned that Christians might vote in the current election given the tragic political character flaw of boasting that for him obviously precludes the task of voting for President. Piper does not provide biblical examples to support his thesis and offers only the well-worn hermeneutic that all sin is of equal offense in the eyes of God so boasting will be as deadly as abortion, according to Piper. In reality, the Bible is replete with human beings plagued with boasting character flaws and yet assigned to not only leadership but political sovereignty.

If folks had done their homework they would know that Trump studied at the feet of Norman Vincent Peal, the father of positive thinking. Pay attention and you can see that he puts everything that he’s working toward under the light of positive thinking. He sees the target and “knows” he can hit it, and literally drags the country with him. He also was raised in the Presbyterian Church and that means he knows more about the Bible than his accusers. Catechism involves some Bible study.
More proof that the Great Accuser Satan knows scripture and uses it against us all.
Different institutions need different types of leaders. The leader of a government has different criteria than the leader of a church, school, or business.
Well, let’s put it this way do I vote for the vain and boastful, or do I vote for the person that wants to put us all in concentration camps and have us destroyed, or if not himself, then the people under him definitely would love to see something like that happen.
As for me, I’ve already made my choice. Vain and boastful it may be, but I also believe it’s the only choice then I could make. Survive, or die. That’s my choice.
We have a pro life, pro religious freedom President vs a corrupt pro baby killing ex VP perhaps a little too friendly with female children. We’re not electing an altar boy here.
Christians should only care about freedom and protecting life.
Looks mean nothing. Principles are everything
I think a bunch of these guys are in love with their degrees and their cult of personality.
I vote for the person who best represents the platform I support.
This is not a personality contest.
I am of the opinion that Christians have an obligation to be “as smart as the fox” and vote for those “princes” that will advance the Kingdom of God.
I also believe that when one candidate belongs to a party that willfully removes any references to God, murders babies, works to establish slavery (socialism) and deny the people the right to worship ... the answer becomes very clear.
Why do you see the speck in your neighbors eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, Let me take the speck out of your eye, while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbors eye.
Until the perfect man, Jesus Christ, returns, imperfect men are all we have to choose from.
I find it bewildering that Christians can be so sure that greater damage will be done by bad judges, bad laws, and bad policies than is being done by the culture-infecting spread of the gangrene of sinful self-exaltation, and boasting, and strife-stirring (eristikos). How do they know this? Seriously! Where do they get the sure knowledge...
That is because he himself is a narcissistic dick, given to his own boastfulness as a moral accountant with his own off the books method of record keeping.
When everyone is trying to tear you down and make excuses to for your success you might engage in a little battle of your own that evidence based not your pathetic, self serving opinion that has at it’s core a hollow self elevating spiritual plane defined only by him and not some universal standard.
John Piper is a willing tool of Moloch and Satan, The Great Deceiver.
Piper is not stupid.
Oh brother. By his logic the ONLY person someone should vote for would have NO sins. Come to think about it that might be the best option...vote for JC and forget the rest....
The question should be... do you vote for the freedom to worship or to have Chinese-style limitations on faith? It’s a simple binary choice here.
So... Trump’s occasional braggadocio is on the same level as the murder of millions of unborn children? This guy is an idiot.
NO ONE was more VEIN and BOASTFUL than Obama and did NOTHING to be boastful about!!!
“Piper can boast of special knowledge of Greek words like eristikos but he cannot boast of a superior knowledge with regard to whether Christians should vote for President on November 3.”
Really liked that little dig . . .
How about choosing the path of destruction that doesn't promise to get every Christian fired from his or her job and their business shut down, and maybe get you jailed like Bible-believing preachers in Canada. 'Cos I don't like that path of destruction as much as the alternatives.
