Democrats ask Pence to skip Barrett vote over COVID-19 risk

WASHINGTON - A deeply torn Senate is set to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, but Democratic leaders are asking Vice President Mike Pence to stay away from presiding over Monday’s session due to potential health risks after his aides tested positive for COVID-19.

But Democrats said in a letter to Pence on it’s “not a risk worth taking,” according to copy obtained by The Associated Press.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and his leadership team wrote that not only would Pence’s presence violate Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, “it also be a violation of common decency and courtesy.”

“Nothing about your presence in the Senate tomorrow can be considered essential,” the Democrats wrote. They warned of the risk not just to senators but the police, restaurant workers and others who keep the Capitol running.

Schumer, of New York, said the Trump administration’s drive to install Barrett during the coronavirus crisis shows “the Republican Party is willing to ignore the pandemic in order to rush this nominee forward.”

To underscore the potential health risks, Schumer urged his colleagues Sunday not to linger in the chamber but “cast your votes quickly and from a safe distance.” Some GOP senators tested positive for the coronavirus following a Rose Garden event with Trump to announce Barrett’s nomination, but they have since said they have been cleared by their doctors from quarantine.

By pushing for Barrett’s ascension so close to the Nov. 3 election, Trump and his Republican allies are counting on a campaign boost, in much the way they believe McConnell’s refusal to allow the Senate to consider Obama’s nominee in February 2016 created excitement for Trump among conservatives and evangelical Christians eager for a Republican president to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Democrats can cast their votes, and then leave the room.

I believe that the reason Pelosi and the RATs, even Fauci, at first, acted like it was no big deal is that they were waiting for a larger spread of the virus. They did this to all of us so they could use it to win.

And yes, they are that immoral.

An obvious signal that they even now persist in leaning on Murkowski and probably others.

Only one person so far has nailed it. Schumer thinks (or knows) he can maneuver a 50-50 tie, and he is trying to keep the VP from casting the tie-breaking vote. It’s so obvious.

If you have a beer and fries
You’ll live a life of joys and highs
A beer alone will do you in
Cause the virus can get through your skin

Mewzilla, you made me think...if this virus can tell between essential and non-essential...and measure time and distance...how can we harness this? Sounds like an App for your smartphone, only better, because you just let it do its thing (as long as it only goes after non-essential people in the Government who are sitting on their arses...:)

But , but Pence in wearing a mask standing at least 6 ft. apart. Now the 6ft. may be because of the stench of so many Democrats

Not sure who he’s thinking but clearly he must think (or pray) that he can swing it to 50-50.

Murkowski voted no on proceeding but says she vote yes on the actual confirmation. But I don’t Trust her. Is she’s not lying that’s 52-48 vote. However like I said I wouldn’t trust her... so if she goes no it’s 51-49... so would need her to not keep her word and have someone else turncoat...

Not sure who, maybe Romney, he has said he will vote to confirm, maybe he could flip... but if not him? Who Else?

Collins is already a no..

I mean, he really isn’t needed, they have the votes. He could stay in a room, and if something weird happens and it becomes important, they could bring him in.

On the other hand — think about the horrible message of fear the democrats are sending. Pence will never be within range of anybody in the room, but we are supposed to believe that just because there is a slightly higher possibility he might have been exposed, that it puts the entire room at risk.

And since EVERY one of us could be exposed at ANY time, that means NOBODY is safe in ANY room of ANY size if anybody is ever in the room with you.

Meanwhile, I just spend 3 days at Disney in florida, it was relatively crowded, but people kept their distance, lines were well-managed, people had masks on. And Disney has reported no COVID spread in 3 months. Even though on most rides, we are in indoor queues, with hundreds of other people only 6 feet away, for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Pence needs to be there because some of thew Republican Senators are untrustworthy.
