There was a low bar for Joe Biden in the first debate, given his cognitive challenges. Because he exceeded that pessimism, he won momentum.
In opposite fashion, there was similarly an expectation that a disruptive Donald Trump would turn off the audience by the sort of interruptions and bullying that characterized the first debate.
He did not do that. He instead let a cocky Biden sound off, and thus more or less tie himself into knots on a host of topics, but most critically on gas and oil. So likewise Trump will gain momentum by exceeding those prognoses.
But far more importantly, the back-and-forth repartee will not matter other than Trump went toe to toe, but in a tough, dignified manner and beat Biden on points. Biden did not go blank although he come close, often especially in the last 20 minutes. Had the debate gone another 30 minutes, his occasional lapses could have become chronic.
What instead counts most are the days after. The debate take-aways, the news clips, the post facto fact checks, and the soundbites to be used in ads over the next ten days all favor Trump. In this regard, Biden did poorly and will suffer continual bleeding in the swing states.
By the weekend Biden will be out of his basement and trying to reboot his campaign and actually be forced to campaign.
But most importantly, Trump kept his cool, was deferential to Welker, and was tough but not cruel to Biden.
The final question is not whether Trump won and will be seen to have won bigly by next week, but to what degree Bidens suicidal talk of ending fossil fuels and denial of the Hunter Biden evidence that cannot be denied implode his campaign early next week or not until Election Day.

Namenda maybe.
I'm anxious to see today's, hopefully Trump leverages Biden's statements about putting the energy business out of business driving gas to over $5/gallon. Suburban moms will need $100 to fill their SUV's.
Last Night’s debate shows why Early voting sucks
Good point .....Biden is going from dementia to incipient Alzheimer’s......cant remember anything.
I don’t think he was looking at the time. He was reading a text from one of his handlers.
The bottom line is this:Trump didnt lose any support for things he said in the debate and his points of opening up the economy and full steam ahead with the energy sector is appealing to undecideds. Bidens positions of doom and gloom over Covid, more possible shutdowns and banning fossil fuels had to have hurt him with undecided voters in key states.
Think Michiganders are ready for more economy destroying lockdowns after the courts just repeatedly smacked down Gestapo Gretchen for this?
Think Pennsylvanians who were thrown a lifeline by fracking after being put out of factory jobs are ready to have fracking taken away from them now too?
Bigly.
When GHWB looked at his watch in a 1992 debate with Clinton and Perot, the media excoriated him for it. They were so loud and unrelenting it actually moved the polls a few points toward Clinton. Don’t expect the same media crowd to say much about their guy looking at his watch.
I actually missed the watch thing, but it was obvious by his body language that Joe did NOT want to be there.
When Biden mentioned Trump having banking accounts in China, my wife smiled over at me and said, “The idiot just opened the door.”
VDH was one of the signatories of NR's infamous "Against Trump" cover. Now he's a fervent convert.
He and Katie Pavlich are the only ones I've forgiven for that. Him for his eloquence, her for her hotness.
This is why Trump in Sept was trying to move the debates earlier. He said it was stupid to have the 3rd debate when 1/4 of the nation had already voted.
Trump needs to unleash a barrage of ads with Joe promising an end to oil.
It’s also a lie that schools need tons more extra money to open up. They already got CARES Act money, and can buy hand sanitizer with it. Most kids already have masks by now, if their tyrannical school board requires them.
The teachers unions want billions of $$ because they want to hire twice of themselves and build twice the classrooms and then teach 15 kids instead of 30 so they can be 6 feet apart. Which the CDC and WHO say is unnecessary.
Bedtime is important to people w/ dementia. Its a constant that they can refer to.
I remember reading that Dan Quayle would remove his wedding ring before debates and speeches because he had a habit of playing with it while he was speaking.
And he was considered the dumb one.
One more question, Why would you touch your watch when reading the time? Both Bush and Biden did that? Is that some elitist thing?
Biden’s closing line of a “Dark winter ahead” will not get him any votes from undecideds. Who wants such doom and gloom when they vote for a president?
At one point, President Trump told Welker that he thought she was doing a good job as moderator of the debate. Whether or not you agree, I think that was a smart move.
Kitchen table ad, two suburban moms discussing how they fear for their husband's retirement 401k with Biden, and with the elimination of the energy industry and their husbands job in jeopardy due to Biden's economic shutdown they wonder aloud how they will fill the SUV with $5 gasoline to take the kids to piano and soccer practice.
Vote Biden = socialized OBidencare medicine, higher taxes, COVID mask shutdown economy, no oil and gas industry, more Biden crime family corruption.
Or vote Trump to give you hope and a future.
