This was mostly during the very risk-averse Clinton era, and while one might have expected them to lean towards being zero tolerance control freaks regarding management of their commands, this all too often spilled over into their personal politics as well, believing that the American people, like their soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, needed to be led with a firm hand, being told what was for their own good.
Of course, their post-retirement plans also hinged to a great degree on government largesse to the contractors and think tanks on which they were going to cash in.

He was supposed to be National Security Advisor under Clinton. While commander at SOCOM, there was a required attendance event for Hilary Clinton at the base theatre.
