San Francisco Won't Reopen Schools. But It Will Rename Them.

The officials in charge of San Francisco's public schools are hard at work—not coming up with a plan to quickly reopen the schools, but to rename as many as 44 of them.

As parents, teachers, and principals deal with the frustrations of distance learning, the San Francisco Unified School District recently asked them to brainstorm replacements for schools that are "inappropriately" named after problematic historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and even Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D–Calif.).

"I don't think there is ever going to be a time when people are ready for this," Mark Sanchez, president of the school board and a member of the committee that proposed the changes, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Predictably people are going to be upset no matter when we do this."

Maybe. But people are more upset right now, because San Francisco's public schools aren't even open and have no plans to reopen until probably January.

Many private schools in the city have successfully reopened. San Francisco, like D.C., New York City, Chicago, Baltimore, and many other large cities, has deemed it safe for privileged kids to go back to school. Yet families that rely on public education have been told they must wait, no matter the harmful consequences for their children.

Given the difficulties of virtual education, parents might expect school officials to be making every effort to reopen as soon as possible. But in San Francisco, reopening doesn't seem like nearly as high a priority as renaming buildings or covering up offensive art. The Chronicle's report on the renaming committee's deliberations borders on parody:

I imagine Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington would approve of their names being taken off San Francisco Public School buildings!

I thank God on a regular basis that I live as far away from crazyfornia as is possible and still be in the CONUS.

A real shame such a beautiful state has gone down the toilet.

Rename an elementary school for some real black pioneers. Perhaps one for Anthony Johnson. He established slavery in the English colonies in 1642 when he refused to release John Casor from his indenture (which Casor had worked off). The crown court declared that Casor owed his labor to Johnson for the remainder of his life, thereby establishing slavery in the colonies. Honor Anthony Johnson for his part in American history and in forming the psyches of so many Americans!

San Francisco must be renamed. The city is named for a person responsible for the deaths and disruption of hundreds of thousands of Jews by the Roman Catholic Inquisition.

The Inquisition was prelude to the holocaust. To celebrate the inquisition is a crime against humanity

... "inappropriately" named after problematic historical figures ...

Which means the only safe and permanent names must be names like "SD5 ES3" (School District 5, Elementary School 3). Such names, while awkward in school slogans and sport chants, will have minimal offense value EXCEPT to the numerology fringe who would object to something there, I'm sure!

It is a FACT OF HISTORY that every 'historical figure' is problematic to someone. Even naming for local school-board members can turn out badly. In San Francisco you could have closet cisgenderists, non-ethnic educators or, horrors, active conservatives!

Inappropriation is a political act having nothing to do with education below the high school level. Small minds doing small malignancies for momentary gratifications. Make that 'very small minds', neuron deficient even!

Washington High and Lincoln High are heavily Asian, and the kids and parents do NOT want them renamed. SF’s Asians are heavily 1st and 2nd gen and are proud to be in the USA, and they like it that their schools are named for great Americans.

This crap is coming from the perpetually left-wing school board that was voted in by non-parents.

I have immediate family in San Francisco and am aware of its stupid educational policies.

One of the kids turned school age this year and was assigned to a school across town in a very bad area - even though there is an elementary school across the damn street.

SF schools assign kids according to race, not area. Fortunately, family was well enough off to put kid in a private school much closer to home.

Saint Francis of Assisi? What did he have to do with the Inquisition?

A lot of Southerners did the same back in the 1960s. The desegregation of the Northern schools was much harder because of protests.

I think you are mixing up the Franciscans with the Dominicans. The Dominicans were founded by St. Dominic to fight heresy. St. Francis was busy talking to birds and trying to convert the sultan, not going after heretics.
