Instead of a debate, President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden participated in dueling town halls on Thursday night and early ratings indicate the former vice president had a larger audience.
The two presidential candidates were originally scheduled to have their second debate, but concerns about a new coronavirus moved the event to a virtual format. After Trump refused to participate if it wasn't in person, Biden opted for a town hall moderated by ABC's George Stephanopoulos. On Wednesday, NBC announced Savannah Guthrie would moderate a town hall with Trump.
Having separate town halls taking place at the same time came under fire as critics said voters were forced to choose which one to watch in real time. With up to 95 percent of people already decided on who they're voting for, the majority of viewers watching likely picked the candidate they supportalthough former Today co-host Katie Couric speculated that some might tune into Trump's town hall given his unpredictability.
Nielsen ratings confirmed what people watching YouTube viewership counts already knew: more people tuned in to see what Biden had to say than Trump. ABC News' YouTube stream of Biden's town hall had a million more viewers than NBC News' live stream of Trump's.
In a head-to-head matchup between NBC and ABC, Biden had nearly four million more viewers, according to Nielsen. Although Trump took the lead in YouTube views when factoring in the CNBC live stream, MSNBC and CNBC television viewers weren't enough to edge Biden out of the top spot, according to preliminary data.
Adding the 671,000 CNBC and 1,740,000 MSNBC viewers to the 10,655,000 people that watched on NBC, a total of about 13.07 million people watched Trump's town hall, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. Biden had 13.9 million viewers on ABC alone,

Thanks. This is probably the ___ post on this subject.
Missed it. Did Joe do a good job in fielding the questions about Burisma?
Viewers already know Trump and his list of accomplishments. They wanted to see what else Biden could be evasive about.
Trump is out there 24-7.
A Biden sighting on the other hand is quite rare.
RE: Did Joe do a good job in fielding the questions about Burisma?
That was NEVER brought up by George Stephanopoulos in Biden’s Townhall.
Jenni Fink is some journalist: it should be “Whose Town Hall ...”
People tuned into the Biden event to see if he actually came out of his basement. Where as, why watch the President being criticized by a Democrapt fake news person when one can see him in person at a public rally.
Some folks who watched the Trump one switched over to some of biden at the end since biden was on longer. Wonder if they counted on those numbers twice.
Only for the comedy.
Exciting for you, hold on to that while your clutching your pearls and crying in you hankie on November 4 th
Probably tuned in to see Biden have a stroke on tv.
NBC played tricks with the scheduling. Everything I saw prior to last night said that Trumps town hall was going to be on NBC, but when I went there it was nowhere to be seen. Took a while to finally figure out that it was on CNBC of all places (and MSNBC, from what I understand now). I think many people probably had similar difficulty finding it.
IMO Bidens audience was a tech hack. There is no way his viewership was higher than Trump
Bad grammar in the very first word. Urinalism at its best.
Nah. Google search and one mouse click.
People thought Jay Z and Beyonce would be asking the questions. From what I have read, questions for Joe were by members of the DNC
Does it count YouTube views? Seems that many markets aired the Biden townhall, but not the Trump townhall. Thats a lot of people who viewed Trump live on YouTube.
