Washington (CNN)Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, wrote in Ronald Reagan for president when he cast his 2020 ballot.
"I know it's simply symbolic. It's not going to change the outcome in my state. But I thought it was important to just cast a vote that showed the kind of person I'd like to see in office," Hogan told The Washington Post in an interview released Friday.

This man is a fool.
If he really wanted to do something useful, since he can’t stand Trump, he could have either left the Presidential ballot blank or voted for JoJo.
Just another reason that I’m both glad I didn’t vote to re-elect this idiot in 2018 and also that I just left the GOP.*
*No worries; I’m still the same pragmatic conservative who will vote mostly for Republicans on my ballots. And I’m still voting for Trump, too. However, if the GOP-e in the Senate can’t even bother to hold a hearing for a Trump FCC nominee who has indicated a willingness to stand up to Big Leftist Tech (a.k.a. Big Drecch, home to the tech side of Marxist Revolution USA), then why should I even bother being a Republican?
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I voted for him in 2014: let not the perfect be the enemy of the good.
But after understanding about his corruption with his Hogan Strong slush fund (supposedly for cancer patients), as a cancer survivor myself, if I had voted for him in 2018, I would have been saying, “Let not the perfect be the enemy of the bad!”
So I voted for Shawn Quinn (LP) instead.
Yes, he would.
We’re currently in Stage III re-opening. Even movie theaters are open for limited capacity. He’s a slug, all right, but he’s still doing better than Newsom, Cooper, Cuomo and probably Whitmer as well.
The roads where I am are fine. If sluggy Pelosi would allow the “Problem Sovers Caucus” compromise aid bill to pass in Congress, then maybe the highway department, starved of gas tax revenue during the shutdown, could get the funds necessary to fix the roads where you live.
He could have chosen Jo Jorgensen (LP), the one pro-freedom candidate on the ballot besides Trump.
Also Congress, in which case, if the House remains in Pelosi's hands, then fuhgeddaboudit.
I lost all respect for him when he not only did not vote for Trump in 2016, but made a really big deal advertising that he would not vote for Trump. He could have just stayed quiet.
I agree.
But, sorry, the great man is dead and unavailable.
Maybe Ill write in Washington.
Thanks Larry, for helping sink us.
I dont think it would require approval of the states involved. You cant make DC a state without a constitutional amendment anyway. So the provision that requires state approval would be overrriden as well when you amend the Constitution.
I.8.xvii:
To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States,
IV.3.i:
nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.
I want to increase the size though. Add Democrat areas to it, which would turn VA and MD red. Also, I would add a provision that says Congress cannot provide any financial aid or benefit to the New Columbia state unless the same benefit is provided to every other state on a per capita basis.
There would be a seat of the government encompassing White House, Capitol, SCOTUS, etc. - can’t be any larger than 100 sq mi. - no matter how small it got it would still retain 3 EV unless you passed a constitutional amendment.
Then a new state running from Baltimore to Prince William County - New Columbia? Marva? It looks like it would take in at least 7 US House seats (4 from MD - Montgomery, Prince George, Baltimore, and a connector; 2 from VA plus old DC would get one)
Then Old Maryland - 4 US House seats at the most.
Then Old Virginia - 8 or 9 US House seats
Your idea would require a constitutional amendment.
The above plan would require only Congressional approval plus MD and VA legislatures.
LOL!
I agree. But I think youre more likely to get a constitutional amendment than approval by VA and MD. The Red States outnumber the Blue States. They would support my proposal. The Blue States would likely not since they lose ground in the Senate.
Also I am not convinced that your legislative proposal really makes DC a state. It makes the surrounding area a separate state. But DC is still DC under your proposal. You cant change that without changing the Constitution.
DC cannot become a state. If so, then the Federal Government would be under the jurisdiction of a lesser (state) government.
I don’t think there is any way to fix the Constitution to allow for that.
Well that was the original logic for not making it a state. But thats different from saying it CANNOT be a state. It can if the law says so. Lots of countries have capital cities that are parts of particular provinces. The Dems want it to be a State and will make it a State on their terms if they have a chance. My proposal would make them think Be careful what you wish for.
So the Federal Government would be subject to the jurisdiction of the “State of DC?” DC would immediately become the most powerful state in the Union, just by virtue of its ability to tax the Federal Government’s income.
I don’t see how that could work in practice, and for damned sure the other states would have something to say about it!
The federal government has operations in every state of the union but that doesnt mean the state controls the federal government. My state cannot tax federal property.
And that's the issue. Currently, DC is Federal property. If DC becomes a state, then it has sovereignty over its territory, and so what of the Federal property? Or is DC to become a state with no territory?
