In many parts of the country, this summers sometimes violent street demonstrations have cast a pall over political expression, Baris said.
We spoke to a store owner in central Florida who had pro-Trump signs all over it in 2016, Baris said. Not this year. Now he told us hes afraid of getting a brick through the window.
The fear of street violence is another reason why flotillas and car caravans have taken off, Ryan added.
Were safe out there, he said. It sounds so sick to say that. But these extremists, these rioters, they cant get to us out there.
And it only intensifies the resentment that Trump voters feel toward the elites who as Hillary Clintons basket of deplorables comment revealed hold them in disdain.
In the Trump era, theres a lot of social pressure not to identify as a Trump supporter, said Glenn Harlan Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee who runs the Instapundit politics blog. When people brave that pressure, it can gather its own momentum touching off whats known as a preference cascade.
A preference cascade happens when you have a lot of people concealing their true beliefs because of social or government pressure, explained Reynolds, who has studied the phenomenon. They keep concealing their feelings until something triggers them to see theyre not alone.
Thats what drove Ryan to set sail in the Trump flotilla last month.
I thought it may have some influence on people who feel they are alone, he said. Theyre watching on the sidelines, so afraid to say what they really think.
I went out there to say, No, there are a hundred million of us out here, and you are one of us.

Praying thats the case.
Trump will be reelected and I will not be surprised at all.
Praying thats the case!
ALSO!
Just like in WW II where the ships had to convoy for protection from Nazi submarine wolfpacks.
Trump 315, Biden 200.
Unexpected!
Enthusiasm is off the charts compared to the Biden supporters, however there’s still a lot of question about how organized the anti-Trump and pro-Biden elements are, particularly the ones that would influence vote counts like ballot harvesting operations and get out the vote efforts. The near total absence of college-age activists to do phone banks and canvassing from central campus locations has to figure in somewhere.
Wonderful article, thanks for the post. Had a Trump parade here in my town this weekend......had to be well over 100 trucks. Never seen so many flags and good people in one place!
Wonderful!
What state?
you got that right!
after 4 yrs of Trump, and back to biden and that bunch..its a real let down and back to that sad era..
even Pence does not bring the excitement of Trump.. he has that personality...
but above even that.. he cares...
think on this... we have had politicians from all areas.. with all kinds of background and all kind of reasons to be in politics...
+++ and NONE of them because they cared for the public... for the people out here...
they cared about themselves... the step up.. the money.. but not the people.
TRUMP CARES!!!!! it oozes out to the people.. and washington cant stop it... and cant mimic it....
real is real..
There is NO enthusiasm for voting among my classmates. Disdain/disgust for Trump (and, yes, some anger), but ZERO positivity, nothing at all like 2008.
If anything, I sense a certain anger that they are being forced (in their view) to vote for an “old white loser” like Biden.
Yup—we deplorables will have the last word—again!
I believe Trump will win BUT I’m concerned about what the Democrats and their “news” media will do afterwards. They will not accept President Trump’s reelection and will litigate and “count” votes until they get the result they want. Don’t be surprise if we another 2000 election situation where its not settled for weeks or months later.
Not sure that Trump winning will be much of a surprise.
I see by those numbers that at least Trump WILL WIN.
I see by those numbers that at least Trump WILL WIN.
Trump statues on our front lawns!
