Federal authorities have closed their investigation into a “hate crime” incident in Madison, Wisc., where a black woman claimed four white men threw lighter fluid on her and set her on fire after shouting a racial epithet.
Eighteen-year-old Althea Bernstein claimed she was the victim of a June hate crime attack. Her story was uncritically reported across the nation. CNN, NBC, Good Morning America, and most major print publications told a horrific story.
Althea Bernstein, 18, told investigators she was stopped at a traffic light in the city at around 1 a.m. Wednesday when she heard someone yell a racial slur through her rolled-down window, according to a police department incident report
“She looked and saw four men, all white. She says one used a spray bottle to deploy a liquid on her face and neck, and then threw a flaming lighter at her, causing the liquid to ignite,” the report states.
But after an investigation by the FBI, which included examining every scrap of video available, no evidence ever emerged of a “hate crime” and, indeed, Bernstein was nowhere to be seen.
Washington Free Beacon:
“After reviewing all available evidence, authorities could not establish that the attack, as alleged by the complainant, had occurred,” U.S. attorney Scott Blader said in a Friday statement. A statement from Madison’s chief of police stated that “detectives were unable to corroborate or locate evidence consistent with what was reported.”
In a statement released by police, Bernstein and her family said they “appreciate the detailed investigative efforts by all involved in this case.”

No, it is PJ media and other conservative news sites that you would have thought would learn a lesson by now from these hate crime hoaxes stories ... because the “media” will never print a retraction or correction.
The media puts these out knowing it is a BS story, but meets their agenda.
Notice the other story statement:
“CNN and NBC haven’t gotten around to issuing a correction yet.”
And they never will ... that’s the point. The vast majority of people who heard the original story will always believe it since there is no correction or retraction ... only in a small town newspaper will you see the story rebuked.
Close the investigation and charge her with a hate crime.
It was probably one of those assault lighters. Pretty dangerous. :)
Prosecution for filing a false police report would be a good place to start. I think it's a felony, no?
She may be now, but after reparations she will be flush.
When was she rolling down the window? What was the average temperature? In my experience, blacks despise the cold.
The ONLY way the lighter would have stayed lit was if it was one of the old Zippo/Ronson types that used lighter fluid. No butane lighter would have stayed lit. Only imaginary ones would.

Left: hate crime hoaxes and justified police shootings that led to riots.
Right: actual hate crimes and unjustified police shootings that led to riots.
I suspect the second list would be amazingly short.

When was the last time you saw a lighter that would stay lit without keeping pressure on a switch or button. Did they throw Grandpaws Ronson lighter at her?
Is creating a make believe crime against the law? Shirley this person should have to pay for all the time and effort used to ‘believe’ her made up story.

Assault lighters are not already banned in Wisconsin? Some state legislative representative needs to get on that HIGH HIGH horse and get them banned.

IIRC, the nail in the coffin of this hoax is not an absence of evidence, but evidence that proves the claimer was elsewhere at the time this “attack” supposedly occurred.
False accusers must get the prison time the falsely accused would get.
