Face masks don't restrict oxygen or contribute to carbon dioxide buildup: study

Breathe easy. A new study suggests that surgical face masks don’t cause a buildup of carbon dioxide or restrict oxygen, despite opposing claims. The study, on the “Effect of Face Masks on Gas Exchange in Healthy Persons and Patients with COPD,” which was published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society on Friday, was conducted after a group of Florida residents challenged Florida’s mask-wearing mandate in June, arguing that wearing the protective face coverings could result in the buildup of too much carbon dioxide.

LIES. This is part of the campaign to make masks permanent, or as Orwell might have put it: a boot stomping a masked human face, FOREVER.

They don’t wear masks all day long. They wear them for a few hours (in a cold, high oxygen environment, if they’re in the OR) and not every day, but only in surgery or if making the rounds where bacterial contamination might be a problem.

They also do not reuse them. Ever. During a long stint in the ER, they'll often swap them for new after a while.

It is lunancy to wear the same mobile petri dish on your face all day, every day.

1) This says this study “suggests”... I stopped reading right there!

2) Masks Do NOT stop this virus

3) You want to wear one, be our guest, but don’t be snarky and imply we should all just shut up and wear these ridiculous masks!

4) They do indeed restrict your oxygen intake!

My body adjusts the carburetor— I find myself becoming a flycatcher, if I have a mask on for an extended period.

Now, if a policeman puts a mask over a face...THEN it would reduce oxygen.

“If you’ll drop dead from putting on a mask, why aren’t doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who have worn them a great deal of the time for over a century being hauled away by the thousands, on a daily basis, to the morgue?”

Because doctors, painters, asbestos workers, ect, all get to take their mask off throughout the day. No personnel, medical or otherwise, has ever wore their mask for 12 hrs straight. A doctor would take his off the moment he left surgery. The painter, once he was out of the room he was painting, same for the asbestos guy.

That is why.

"I’m 65 with seasonal asthma..."

I'm about the same age and have a condition that causes a more general congestion that includes asthma-like trouble breathing, but I might be able to beat it. Working on that.

People just need to learn to calm down and breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. The belly should rise with each breath--not the chest. That's difficult to do with asthma (especially during an attack), but it helps to try.

Personal experience. I go to a particular store in which I have to pick up 4 50 Lb. bags, and put them on a cart. I have several other 16 lb. bags as well, but the 50 lb. bags are the ones that really get me. I don’t give a damn about the rules, the mask comes off until I can breathe again after loading those bags. I’m 73, and I cannot breathe in the process of loading heavy bags to the cart, or later to my car, or truck whichever I have taken to the store that day. Mask off, no problem. I can still do about anything, but with that damned mask on I can’t breathe on many occasions.

Well duh. Anyone who thought that is a Nancy. It’s idiotic to even suggest that a surgeon or nurses can wear one for hours - day after day, year after year- and be fine- but everyone else is going to pass out after 15 minutes or have some sort of damage. It was an excuse and a pretty pathetic one at that.

Face masks don't restrict oxygen or contribute to carbon dioxide buildup: study

That may be true but I doubt it.

I have COPD. After wearing a mask I sometimes become light headed, I assume because I'm not getting enough oxygen.

And the CDC itself accidentally admitted that masks are little use against the COVID-19 virus:

So how long is it before a person keels over from a mask?
What is the time frame? You have the numbers from stats and studies on the timeline from putting on mask until death occurs, I assume.

In a controlled environment where the issue has been scientifically studied, even people wearing an N95 mask while exercising experience no issues: http://www.rcjournal.com/contents/05.10/05.10.0569.pdf

The data is right there. You can choose to ignore it. You can choose to not believe it. But people have tried it, studied it, and demonstrated that even an N95 mask has no adverse impact on someone who doesn’t already have a respiratory problem.

"Did the article say we should just wear them all the time whether a virus is extant or not? It seems like that’s the end game here."

No. It was for the unruly mobs in Florida. I look forward to the day, when people in polling locations and busy stores no longer need to wear them, even in the more civilized areas.

Almost all the masks I see are cloth masks, usually fairly heavy ones. They restrict breathing, thus oxygen. That’s why you feel a sense of relief when you remove it or when you uncover your nose.

These cloth masks had to be invented. Our little town made tens of thousands of them in the Spring. But they are of no value in the grocery store because you don’t spend enough time around anyone. Social distancing keeps you safe. The mask is more of a virtual signal in areas where you can socially distance. Who says that? The New England Journal of Medicine.

Face coverings work primarily on outbound air, not so much inbound air.

Patient on operating table. Doc and nurses wearing masks, patent not.
