The Nation, a storied left-wing magazine, pondered the possibility of secession in an interview published Tuesday morning.
The idea has been circulating on the left over the past few weeks, as Democrats ponder the possibility of President Donald Trump being re-elected. Though many mainstream media polls show former Vice President Joe Biden with a lead, the polls have been wrong before and Trump is running a confident, energetic campaign, while Biden is barely leaving his house.
The interview, Should the United States Stay United?, conducted by Jessica Suriano with Richard Kreitner, author of Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of Americas Imperfect Union, focuses on the idea that secession need not be tarnished by slavery. Abolitionists, Kreitner argues, also considered seceding from the Union and progressives should consider it today:
JESSICA SURIANO: Why did you think it was important in this book to address all of these other separatist movements that have happened in the past and across the political spectrum?
RICKY KREITNER: Of course everybodys heard about the Confederacy and slavery, and it started my historical research, but thats not really where the book came from. It came from this late-Obama-era moment where the thought occurred to me just based on things Id been reading: What if the United States broke apart? Would that be such a bad thing? Is it possible that the progressive policies and programs that I wanted to see put into place might be easier to enact in a smaller entity than the United States, with its 330 million people and the need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests? So with that question...

Umm ... if we split things down the middle, that includes the national debt. Right?
Do our secessionists realize what their taxes will look like once the state of Marxachusetts is established? I dont think theyll enjoy that.
The hard Left is invested in The Great Reset. By any means necessary.
“My guess the people of each state will accept the vote for secession.”
I don’t think they will. Leaving the Union is a huge step. Being an American is something at the core of many people’s identity.
This isn’t the 1860s, when people identified with their state first and then identified as Americans.
I doubt this, the left is poised to win everything.
Why break apart now? Even if Trump prevails and the Reps hold the Senate, it only delays the inevitable. 2024 or by 2030 at the latest the Dems will be in control of everything anyhow.
Demographics is destiny.
Well they can die then.
Trump will never put up with a seccession of states. He will hold the Union together like his idol, Lincoln. If they leave the union, they will have a fight on their hands. How many will pick up rifles to defend California from Trump? Far too few I believe. Facing a draft, how many illegals will stay to fight for an independent Pacifica? How many rioting college kids will join a Pacifican Army to meet Trump Federal Forces on the battlefield? Few indeed. The Civil War will be short indeed.
If CA secedes I will do everything I can to make sure they SUCCEED. Call me Mr. Copperhead. Hopefully cooler heads would prevail and CA goes without war.
Can you post a link to where I ever asserted that the Constitution prohibited it? Thanks. I will wait.
