That’s a silly concept.
Tired, maybe. Our troops have fighting since 2002.
Worn out, maybe. War wreaks pretty dreadful wear and tear on stuff. When was the last time we got a new M-1 tank?
Overextended, maybe. We are in waaaaaaay to many places.
But outdated? Don’t think so. There might be more advanced aircraft or weapons. MIGHT be. But the folks that built them can’t afford to deploy them.
Our biggest issue with destroying Iran would be operating in the constricted waters of the Gulf. That would leave ships vulnerable to anti-ship missiles with little warning. Mines would also be a major threat.
In any case, unless the Iranians do something REALLY stupid we ain’t goin’ there.
We do need force modernization, and there is progress being made, like the JLTV (HMMWV replacement) and the AMPV (M113 replacement). The M1A3 is now being fielded to some units.
But, a lot of the Army’s big systems like the Bradley, Apache, and Black Hawk are 1980s era developments. We’ve gotten very proficient at counterinsurgency that for a while, we took our eye off the ball of conventional war, but there has been a pivot back to that. I think we’ll see more. The JLTV is definitely needed.
“When was the last time we got a new M-1 tank?”
Pretty recently:

The Army is also working on a new paint to replace the old CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating). The new paint not only is chemical resistant, but it lowers the thermal signature of the tank.
They’ve already started development of the Abrams SEPv4 Wich will include improved sights and cannon to allow an increase in engagement ranges.
