We do need force modernization, and there is progress being made, like the JLTV (HMMWV replacement) and the AMPV (M113 replacement). The M1A3 is now being fielded to some units.
But, a lot of the Army’s big systems like the Bradley, Apache, and Black Hawk are 1980s era developments. We’ve gotten very proficient at counterinsurgency that for a while, we took our eye off the ball of conventional war, but there has been a pivot back to that. I think we’ll see more. The JLTV is definitely needed.
I hope the designers of JLTV keep in mind that we tried to turn the HMMWV into a light armored car and make appropriate allowances.
