Report: Republicans Plan to Appoint Electors if Vote Results Delayed

The Atlantic reported Wednesday that Republicans are investigating contingency plans in which Republican-held legislatures would appoint members of the Electoral College if their states’ voting results were still in doubt weeks after Election Day.

Barton Gellman wrote: “According to sources in the Republican Party at the state and national levels, the Trump campaign is discussing contingency plans to bypass election results and appoint loyal electors in battleground states where Republicans hold the legislative majority.”

Gellman provided a sinister spin: “With a justification based on claims of rampant fraud, Trump would ask state legislators to set aside the popular vote and exercise their power to choose a slate of electors directly.”

Hollywood celebrities expressed their alarm, warning that the Atlantic article proves Trump plans to become a “dictator”:

But in every case, it is the Trump campaign that is pushing for votes to be counted as soon as possible, and Democrats who are pushing for longer deadlines for the submission and counting of mail-in ballots, as well as relaxed standards for ballots.

Moreover, Gellman acknowledged that the alleged Republican effort is entirely constitutional. Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution says: “Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress.”

Therefore, if Democrats try to use an uncertain popular vote to throw the election in doubt — and with Joe Biden’s campaign openly boasting that it has recruited at least 600 lawyers to fight over the count — Republicans can short-circuit that effort.

It would be extremely unlikely for Republican-held legislatures to appoint electors in states where Democrats had won the popular vote in a legitimate manner. However...

It is not disenfranchising to expect people who want to vote do so and assure their ballots are delivered in a timely manner and to fill them out correctly.

And if many of these states have early voting varying from 14 to 30 days before the election, then why do they still need nine days after the election for ballots to arrive?

Haven't these people already been given enough time to get their ballots returned?

I suspect this is Trump’s strategy if Dems intentionally use mail-in ballots to prevent real vote tallies from being known. Dems want to put Pelosi in charge if there’s a 10 day delay.

If these states can't get real vote tallies from being known, then how will they know who won the House and Senate races?

We really need to go back to the old voting model. Vote at an official voting site, be identified as a valid voter, and vote. Additionally, have each voter get their index finger inked purple so they won’t vote twice. Have the voting ended at 8 p.m. on voting day. Period. Back in the 1960’s, my Dad was a voting precinct official. He would take the results from voting machines, put them in a locked case and take them to City Hall in SF. Results were confirmed the next morning. Easy.

And hire a convoy of armored cars to take the ballots from the polling places. Watch out for groups of thugs. Watch out for people buying up baseball bats.

Makes it all the more important to replace Ginsberg - he know the SCOTUS will be involved and wants to make sure there are a host of issues being looked at and delved into to insure fraud doesn’t prevail.

IF the House is forced to vote for President for any reason, the vote is by State, each state getting one vote. Republicans have a majority of House Reps in more than enough States to ensure that Pelosi will NEVER be President.
