This is pretty much why so many private businessmen have joined the party. Not because they’re true believers, but because it’s necessary to keep the party off their backs. Most are like the German industrialists who joined the Nazi party - it’s just a defensive measure so your voice is heard if some particularly detrimental diktat is floated by one of your competitors who happens to be a party member. Communist Party membership isn’t exactly some elite distinction - something like 1 out of every 16 Chinese (90m) is a member. It’s almost like being a AAA or AARP member - you pay your dues and get some enumerated benefits.
