Wouldnt it be nice if Democrats and Republicans could just agree that the fair and right course would be to not replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg until after the presidential inauguration in January? We could simply stick, for now, with the precedent established by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell when he refused to hold a vote on the nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Justice Antonin Scalia.
At the time, nearly nine months before the 2016 presidential election, he declared, The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.
But just hours after the announcement of Ginsburgs death on Friday, McConnell declared, President Trumps nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.
There is little Democrats can do to stop Trump from nominating someone and the Republicans from confirming that person quickly, if thats what they choose to do. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and they have eliminated the use of the filibuster in Supreme Court nominations. So the hope must be that four Republican senators perhaps those facing tight reelection races will have the courage to stand up to their party and refuse to allow a confirmation to be rushed through.
That is probably a distant hope. So far, Senate Republicans have shown little inclination to stand up to Trump and McConnell, as was evident in their confirming Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, despite compelling testimony about an alleged sexual assault and perjury and despite clear evidence that he lacked judicial temperament. Nor did Republicans demonstrate any independence or courage during the impeachment of Trump.

Such small minded thinking will never make you a winner.
Media wouldn't dare bring race/racism/sexism into question.
Even now with "white guy" Peters vs. James...you'll not hear a peep.
You see(unlike Trump/his voters)...NOW it was about..."the issues only"...assuming Peters wins.
The Dems brought this on themselves. They are talking about “lack of integrity” and the “hypocrisy” of the Republicans. Talk about calling the kettle black. They declared war when they let loose the scum of the Antifa and BLM rioters. They are running scared, whining about the “moral crisis facing the Republicans”. Yes, the moral crisis for the GOP is if they don’t nominate and install a justice on the SCOTUS before the election, they will be lost to the people and go the way of FOX news. This is probably the only and greatest opportunity for the Republicans to stifle the bleeding and cancerous assault on the American people by the Dems. They simply MUST go forward with a confirmation and installation of a SCJ despite the coming concophenous tantrums to come from the left and MSM. I sure hope the GOP knows what thin ice they are on and how disappointed their cinstintuancy has been with them as of late.
“Such small minded thinking will never make you a winner.”
So, asserting that Trump should nominate the most conservative strict constructionist that can be confirmed...is small minded and losing?
Is that your contention? I want to be clear...
Even if Ginsburg did not die, the Dems were already talking about packing the court after the Kavanuagh appointment when they win the Presidency and Senate. So, as Hillary says, “what difference does it make” if we put another one on the fire for them to have to contend with.
They absolutely would oppose it -- if they aren't the ones filling those seats. That's especially true if Trump were to ram through nominees now for each seat, which he would.
NO!!! I cannot say Justice cRuz!!
cRuz needs to stay in the Senate. He is a reliable vote.
Also, I don’t trust Gov Abbott, right now, to make a replacement appointment.
He is being advised by a Romney RINO....and, making bad choices on our re-opening (from China Flu).....
This guy...
John Wittman has been promoted to Communications Director. Wittman has worked for Governor Abbott since 2014 and was most recently Press Secretary and Senior Communications Advisor within the Office of the Governor. Prior to joining the Governor, Wittman worked on Capitol Hill at the House Republican Conference and was a war room analyst on the 2012 Romney for President Campaign. He is a native of Cincinnati and is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Abbott only has restaurants at 75% and bars are still closed. Not that I go to bars, but it doesn’t make sense to put these people out of biz, while restaurants, and stores, that also sell alcohol, are allowed to either be fully, or nearly open.
And, he says we should wear masks/follow safety guidelines until a vaccine is developed.
His entire China Flu management has been a disaster and I credit this former Romney tool/advisor :-(
...and the CNN dude vows to “burn it all to the ground” should Rs even attempt to fill the vacancy. Portland is back under seige because of RGB.....
....all of it plays into our hands. Keep it up.
RGB has nationalized every senate race....which also plays well for Rs.
They would rather stick with Harry Reid’s precedent.
The dums are going to pack the supreme court when they get the power no matter what the repubs do. So the repubs need to do what they have to do.
Yea...right chiller.
Again with the identity politics. Why does our next Justice need to be black, or Hispanic, or Asian? Why is that a super qualification over all others?
LA Times and Yahoo. Goody.
“...despite compelling testimony about an alleged sexual assault and perjury...”
*blink blink blink*
Yet more proof of the old adage of repeating a lie enough times that it eventually becomes accepted as truth. X.x
LOL! Lefty tears. How delicious.
I dont think you can be sure that the Senate will approve anyone the president nominates. Much more difficult for Democrats and weak-kneed Repubs to oppose a woman or person of color. Moreover, its not at all clear that nominating a white male will help Trump win re-election. Just my opinion.
Give it a rest, already.......you’ve made your point way too many times.
Don’t replace Ginsburg or we’ll shoot this Dog.
Where were we with cell phones tech, social media and the hashtag culture in 2008? Millennials were what 10 years old, they were hard to wake up for school let alone being woke.
“the precedent established by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell when he refused to hold a vote on the nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Justice Antonin Scalia.”
Totally different situation. IIRC, with Garland, it was Hussein’s last term and no chance of him being president after the election.
