My kids learned about the Holocaust, read The Diary of Anne Frank, etc. There was a Holocaust survivor who spoke to the elementary school kids every year for 20+ years until he died recently. It's good old-fashioned nuts-and-bolts, dates-and-times history that is all but absent -- especially about their own country.

I was taught in school World War II started on September 1st, 1939, when it started in 1937.

I was taught that the U.S.S.R. was with the Allies, when they were with the Axis before June 1941.

FWIW as far as topics go people are generally highly aware of the Holocaust and nazis if only through a vague knowledge that they were bad and thus can be applied as a label to opponents rather than actual historical details. At least compared to other things. Like for example Communist atrocities.

Most young people today don't know the definition of "holocaust" or "genocide." And they have no idea where Germany, Poland, or Austria are located or what happened in WWII.

For some time now, it has been the goal of our educational system to dumb kids down (to prepare them for Marxism)...not to educate them.

Every young adult should visit the holocaust museum in D.C. at least once.

The only silver lining to the Holocaust denial craze in the late 70's and early 80's was that it provided an opportunity for the Jewish community to remind everyone about the Holocaust.

I believe it also spurred the creation of a number of Holocaust remembrance museums around the US. I thought that school children were taken on at least one field trip to a Holocaust museum near them. I guess that got squeezed out by "more important" topics.

Look up some videos of students on spring break sometime, being questioned on youtube. When asked “What country did the USA win it’s independence from?” a student answers “Germany in the 1940s.” Not making this up.

Those of us, as kids, who saw our first TV way back in the 1950s remember seeing lots of news shows and documentaries about WW II and the Holocaust. Horrifying to a kid, but it was real.

Such shows today would be blocked on many TV stations and web sites as being too “Brutal” to show.
