I talked about this very topic this morning on my radio show. My girls were 9 and 5. My 5 year old asked me, “Dad, why did they do this?” My older daughter was very frightened and asked me, “Do you have to go to war?”
Much like President Trump’s response for the China Virus, I stayed calm so as not to panic them.
I hope there will be some schools that will allow Matthew Bocci to come speak. They should. Maybe only private schools will allow that. We know it will never be allowed in public schools.
My kids were 10, 12, and 14 when the attacks happened. The youngest one didn’t understand at all. He has told us how at indoor recess that day, the kids would knock over blocks that they used to make buildings, because that’s what all the adults were talking about. They didn’t see the footage at school.
A few years ago, when we visited NYC as a family (minus the oldest as he couldn’t be there with us), we went to the 9/11 Memorial museum. We asked our kids not to meet up with friends until that evening. They were so glad we did that together.
The 10 year old was 26 on the visit to the Memorial. He and his older sister were shaken and emotional going through the different “exhibits”. We all were.
It was hard for them to wrap their minds around it all, having seen things as children, and the difference from when you are an adult. You try to protect your kids as best as you can, but there’s barely any way to understand the horror of that day.
