Officials lauded 'first in the nation' ban, which prohibits private use 'in places of public accommodation'
City Council members voted unanimously on Wednesday to prohibit the public – and, in some cases, private – use of facial recognition technology, making it the most stringent ban of this kind nationwide, according to multiple reports.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty introduced the bans, which immediately took effect for city agencies, and will be effective on Jan. 1 for private businesses, The Oregonian and Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
The ordinances bar the use of facial recognition technology by city agencies and on public property within the city, but also prohibit its use "by private entities in places of public accommodation,” according to city agency Smart City PDX.
Facial recognition technology violates the public’s personal privacy and has “a demonstrated gender and racial bias,” Wheeler said, according to OPB.com.
“Technology exists to make our lives easier, not for public and private entities to use as a weapon against the very citizens they serve and accommodate,” the Democratic mayor reportedly said.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) on Thursday ordered the Portland Police Bureau to cease using a form of tear gas as riots continue to plague the Democrat-run city.
The Oregonian reports:
The declaration that officers will no longer unleash CS gas comes after 105 straight days of protests that have seen city and federal officers deploy tear gas on participants. Over that time, people have also repeatedly been subjected to gas by Portland police in their cars or homes while not participating in the demonstrations. […]
Public records show Portland police have spent tens of thousands of dollars on less-lethal munitions and tear gas canisters in response to nightly protests.
“During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County and state police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler, who also serves as Portland’s police chief, said in a video statement. “We need something different. We need it now.”

In a statement to The Oregonian, Oregon State Police Captain Timothy Fox said: “The OSP will be forced to assess our involvement in assisting the city of Portland.”
“We will not for force our troopers into this untenable situation and limit their ability to defend themselves and others,” he added.
Oregon State Police slammed the move by Wheeler as “reckless and short sighted.”
Wheeler was previously teargassed as he met with protesters back in July.
President Donald Trump and Chad Wolf, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, have repeatedly warned Wheeler that the administration could re-send federal resources into Portland to quell violent unrest.
He’s afraid it will be used to lock up all his voters.
So they don’t want to know who is looting and destroying their city?

That is exactly right... serious crimes are completely ignored in Portland if they had the info on who was actually committing them, they might be forced to do something about it. They certainly cannot let that happen, that would be unfair to the criminals.

I was supposed to be going to a conference that was scheduled in Seattle next year and was planning on going to Portland while on that trip. No way will I be going.

We live near Seattle and used to go to Portland frequently. We will definately not be going back to Portland any time soon.
