It has been decades since Michigan has had anything but two dimwitted rubber stamp Dem US Senators-—always. Hope Gary Peters gets run out by James of the GOP.

Charles Potter, 1952.
Spencer Abraham, 1995.
Otherwise, all Dems all the way.

I believe Debbie Stabenow went through her first term without ever successfully introducing or passing one bill.
Smiled for TV cameras, though. Re-elected.

When I happened 2 or 3 times to hear a stupid dull sounding woman on the radio, I assumed I was hearing the person in front of the supermarket type interviews of passersby about some tornado or other local news event. Wrong. I was hearing Debbie Stabenow, United State Senator !! Embarrassingly uninformed and dumb sounding.

Spencer Abraham was terrible. He was part of the coalition of immigration leftists in the GOP that derailed and scuttled the Smith-Simpson bill in 1996. That was the last time a conservative version of comprehensive immigration reform actually had a chance to pass through Congress. It would have largely undone the 1990 mass immigration expansion bill, and we’d be seeing annual immigration levels closer to 500,000 a year now instead of one million-plus.

But Abraham and others (like Dick Armey, Sam Brownback, and a staffer named Paul Ryan), at the behest of the donor class, and accompanied with some moral preening, undermined the bill, leading eventually to its abandonment, and saving Clinton from a tough sign or veto decision.

And that’s another thing. Peters is an obscurity. James has some name ID from losing to Stabenow two years ago.

Newt Gingrich lost twice before he was elected. James Buckley lost his Senate race two years before he won. John Tower lost his first Senate race. There are many others. That’s encouraging for James.
