Here's another look at Laura -- defined by lightning strikes:

Lightningmaps.org

The value of this map is that it highlights thunderstorms (with potential tornadic activity) -- and shows that the LA coast is already being hit by Laura-spawned T-storms.

Also, it indicates that, as Laura moves inland, the leading-edge T=storm activity will probably extend at least as far down the Texas coast as Port Lavaca.

If it’s not projected to turn north until this evening then houston might not be totally spared. Ugh.

even if it goes a little west then forecast HOU will still be on the weaker side,,,there might be interesting Bay side surge (surge coming in from the NW to Galveston

If this had hit just SW of Galveston TX, this would have been costliest hurricane in history and would have crippled a good chunk of the US oil and gas infrastructure

Still, The Golden Triangle to Cake Charles has some oil and gas infrastructure and chemical plants....and isn't exactly rural

Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area 400,000
Lake Charles Metropolitan Area 200,000 people

many of those will be flooded by surge

It’s probably going to wreak havoc with flooding in mountain states when it gets up there. "

The Greenbrier Valley and Allegheny Highlands along the WV VA border are definitely flood prone from hurricane remnants.

Pressure is actually on the High end for a 140 MPH storm

I suspect the winds may start to level off but the pressure continue to drop at a steady rate
