Can California handle this many wildfires at once? Crews and equipment already ‘depleted’

California’s ability to fight wildfires, already compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic, is being severely strained by a rash of lightning strikes and a stupefying array of new fires.

As major fires burned from Lake County to the South Bay, Cal Fire officials said Wednesday they’re struggling to keep up with 367 new fires that have broken out over the past three days, the result of nearly 11,000 lightning strikes.

“Firefighting resources are depleted as new fires continue to ignite,” said Jeremy Rahn, a Cal Fire spokesman, at a press briefing in Calistoga on the fires burning in the North Bay. He said Cal Fire is asking out-of-state agencies to rush 375 fire engines to the state, and share “hand crews” and other resources.

Will the Franchise Tax Board attempt to collect income tax on the salaries of out-of-state firefighters who come to help?

````
Alien researchers say yes. They just need to raise taxes to the right level.
An array of new fires? A stupefying array? Maybe we should get Inspector Clouseau on the case.
“California’s ability to fight wildfires, already compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic...”
Why would Covid compromise the ability to fight wild fires?
It stuns me, but perhaps shouldn’t, that California doesn’t have better infrastructure and resources to fight these fires.
These fires in California and other Western states are nothing new. Perhaps part of the problem.is that population continues to grow in fire prone areas. Fighting fires in populated areas is more intense and difficult than containing fire in open country, from what I hear.
A piece of good news: the more that burns the less that’s left to burn.
367 in 3 days is pretty stupefying. And is really gonna suck. Good luck to them. We had a really nasty one here. Went all the way across the north side of the mountains. Fun 6 weeks. Luckily nobody died.
Why would Covid compromise the ability to fight wild fires?
Too many inmates were released from prison. They are no longer available to fight fires.
Good news is Govener Newsome did save millions of dollars that were alloticated to reducing fuel loads in the forests by vetoing it.
Perhaps he can spend it on resupplying the fire suppression supplies.
Of course the people who lost their homes are screwed...
For all intents and purposes the atmospheric configuration in the summer prevents cold Pacific storms coming this far south from the Gulf of Alaska during the summer. It essentially never rains but on the rare occasions when it does it’s because of a typhoon or tropical storm falling apart when it approaches the cold coastal waters Off Southern California or Baja, the storm’s energy thereafter streaming ashore. Tropical Storm Fausto is disintegrating 1000 miles southwest of San Francisco but spun off a spear of cloudiness that’s been streaming onshore for four days. Very little rain but lots of thunder and lightning. Very unusual circumstances. I can’t imagine how our infrastructure could have reasonable been prepared for this amount of activity.
Actually as an ex Californian from 20 years ago, the problem with the fires in California is purely politics. The Democrats took over and destroyed the Forestry service.
However the money was diverted to social justice measures so it was not a total loss. Now we have lost the forests, but we have many more social justice types.
Who like fires...
