Two men suspected of withdrawing over $164,000 with fraudulently-obtained unemployment benefit debit cards were arrested this month in Thousand Oaks, officials said Monday.
A resident called 911 on the afternoon of Aug. 6 when she saw two people acting suspiciously at a Bank of America ATM on 1440 N. Moorpark Rd., the Ventura County Sheriffs Office said in a news release.
Deputies responded and stopped a car just as it was leaving the area, finding two grocery bags full of cash and a large amount of Visa debit cards in different peoples names, according to the Sheriffs Office.
Investigators found that the two were using California Employment Development Department debit cards that they obtained by applying for benefits using the stolen identities of multiple victims, all of whom live outside the state, the Sheriffs Office said.
The men then used the cards to make large ATM withdrawals from multiple locations, officials added.

You’re mad at criminals for doing what they do?
Congress ####ed away 3 trillion dollars and WE ALL knew that more than half was gonna be stolen and another quarter would go to companies and friends of congressmen.
But many of them are corporations so they can’t go to prison.
They get a fine.
There were always criminals and perverts and violent offenders.
There was always incredible fraud in our govt. OR at least for a very long time now.
The only way to not have any of that in our lives is to die.
And I’d rather not yet :)
I don’t live in California, it seems I qualify for benefits.
Git ‘em while they’re hot!
How?
Doesn’t EDD check to see if someone is actually unemployed by a specific employer and the SS# associated?

Unemployment fraud is big and has been for a long time.
Nobody goes to the unemployment office anymore. It is all done online. You are just a number. Fraud in the computer age is easy .
And?
Thanks to one sharp eyed resident, these two were caught.
The worst place to act jumpy and jerky is inside of a bank.
Everybody is being stared at, even the tellers at times.

Was it R Reagan as Gov that had them have to show up to collect bennies - at least occasionally?
Not sure but I think DC had to run a plan a few years back where ALL the teachers and/or school employees had to resign and reapply for their job back so as to catch a whole passel full of people that never showed for work but the check kept coming in, person being dead or alive.
But we don't have to keep re-electing them!
