Actually, the ‘Firefly’ movie was called ‘Serenity’.
For those that didn’t watch it, the plot was that the ruling Inner Planets (the Confederation) experimented on a colony world named Miranda. They were testing a drug...unbeknownst to the population... that would make the people compliant to whatever the government told them, while allowing them to live ‘blissful’ lives. What it ended up doing was cause 80% of the population to just kind of ‘shut down’. They just ‘gave up’ right where they were and died. The other 20% had their brains triggered to make them ferocious, feral, and predisposed to raping, murdering, and even cannibalism. These ended up becoming what was known in the story as the ‘Reavers’.
Experimenting with mass distribution of mind-altering drugs to control the masses is never a good thing, and will never turn out the way you intended.
