WASHINGTON (AP) — A former FBI lawyer will plead guilty to making a false statement in the first criminal case arising from U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the probe of ties between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign. The case against Kevin Clinesmith is likely to be cheered by President Donald Trump and his supporters as they look to the Durham investigation to lift Trump’s wobbly reelection prospects and to expose what they see as wrongdoing as the FBI opened an investigation into whether the Trump campaign was coordinating with the Kremlin to sway the outcome of the 2016 election.

According to the IG report, Clinesmith, or FBI attorney 2, sent instant messages to different people, including:
“I mean, I never really liked the Republic anyway.”
“As I have initiated the destruction of the republic… would you be so kind as to have a coffee with me this afternoon?”
“I’m clinging to small pockets of happiness in the dark time of the Republic’s destruction.”
He later sent an instant message to FBI Attorney 1 commenting on the amount of money the subject of an FBI investigation had been paid while working on the Trump campaign. FBI Attorney 1 responded, “Is it making you rethink your commitment to the Trump administration?” FBI Attorney 2 replied, “Hell, no, Viva le resistance.”
So where is the beef? Is this the announcement? Really?
Give the case to Sullivan. He'll dismiss the guilty plea as flawed on that basis.
Clinesmith, a 37-year-old graduate of Georgetown Law, "took an email from an official at another federal agency that contained several factual assertions, then added material to the bottom that looked like another assertion from the email’s author, when it was instead his own understanding," according to the report.Mr. Clinesmith included this altered email in a package that he compiled for another F.B.I. official to read in preparation for signing an affidavit that would be submitted to the court attesting to the facts and analysis in the wiretap application.The details of the email are apparently classified and may not be made public even when the report is unveiled. -New York Times

There are a lot of idiot armchair prosecutors trolling FR today. Making a false statement in violation of 18 U.S.C. 1001 is a process crime that can result in a prison sentence of up to 5 years and a $250,000 fine. A prison sentence is the norm — just ask Martha Stewart and Rod Blagojevich, among others. Indeed, if not for Barr dropping the charges against General Flynn, you can bet that Judge Sullivan would have sentenced him to prison for pleading guilty to making a false statement. My guess is that Durham could have charged Clinesmith with a lot more than making a false statement, but agreed to the lesser charge in exchange for cooperation in the prosecution of others. If Clinesmith truly cooperates, then Durham will recommend a light sentence; if he doesn’t, then Durham will ask for the max.

Clinesmith would not alter the email without being told to. He exchanged that information/PROOF for his deal.
Perhaps that's the deal.

We don't know what the perp offered up to get this deal, but it was his lawyer that went to Durham, looking for a deal.

As I've pointed out in the post just above yours, and many other posts, I've never dismissed the possibility that there would be indictments under Barr.

IMHO, people should accept the good news and await further. There will be more in ObamaGate, not less.
Unfortunately, it will be hard to get a jury to convict some of the senior people involved who will use national security as their defense.
We can hope for the best but not expect the best outcomes.
