Chicago’s Magnificent Mile At Risk For Massive Store Closures, Alderman Says

CHICAGO (CBS) — Is Chicago’s Magnificent Mile at risk for massive store closures? Just two months ago it was the epicenter of unrest. Then this week there was a murder on Oak Street and Michigan Avenue. All of that is on top of a pandemic that has taken a toll on everyone.

A Chicago icon, the Magnificent Mile’s 13 blocks are known across the world. It’s a draw for tourists and a serious boost to the city’s bottom line. What would the city look like without all of this? Hopkins says we could find out.

There are existing vacancies, some stores still boarded up, others dealing with plummeting sales,

“We’re losing tax revenue, and we are losing sales tax on a daily basis,” he said. “If this trend continues, we won’t have a viable downtown. And it’s not going to be that long. We’re talking a few years. Privately they’re telling me they can’t sustain this. They can’t continue at the level they’re at right now, and if it keeps up, we are going to see a rash of business closures in the downtown area.”

Hopkins was in a meeting with Mayor Lori Lightfoot and business owners in the area who were expressing their concerns, when the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon. Rapper FBG Duck was shot and killed. Two others were seriously injured.

“Nordstrom and Bloomingdales and Ferragamo, and all large Marquee stores that are on the avenue here attract people from all over the world and all over the U.S. and Chicago,” said Mike Riordan of the River North Residents Association. “It’s one thing to lose control one weekend, but then it’s another thing for this stuff to keep on going. It opened the floodgates to a bunch of brazenness and lawlessness that we’ve never seen here before.”

Michigan Ave was always at risk for the occasional feral uprising and hell-raising.

Now its become nearly automatic.

antifa, blm and the mayor are getting their wish: destroy businesses, put people out of work, turn downtown into a ghost town ruled by antifa and blm.

The stunningly incompetent mayor, Lori “The Groot” Lightfoot, is waaaaaay out of her league. She was elected mayor because she could check off the right boxes (her only qualification): Black (check); female (check...well, that one’s kind of iffy); queer (check). She’s definitely a one-termer, as even those who supported her candidacy initially have thrown up their hands on her.

It is open for debate whether Chicago will recover from her idiocy. No one wants anything to do with downtown Chicago now, and with the Magnificent Mile closing and the Loop soon to follow, Chicago is finished, and will be another Detroit, only worse.

I’m listening to the radio, and call-ins are openly advocating for the shooting of the rioters and vandals.

Interesting times.

FBG Duck?

Well the South side of Chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a rapper named FBG Duck

This is organized looting, but not widespread arson. If that starts, Chicago will not recover.

To be fair...the Florida to New York tally should include the two-week quarantine New York will impose on Floridians heading North. Two weeks at a La Quinta hotel and the extended U-Haul charge for the truck sitting in the hotel parking lot...would boost the price quite nicely. That doesn't include the cost of any armed guards stationed outside the hotel room door to ensure the disease-spreaders stay indoors. 😁

Any business that stays open there is run by fools. But then most of them are democrats.

I heard (late night AM radio) something about a huge riot of smash and grab, with huge plate glass storefronts shattered. First attempt by police failed to stop the looting. Then seemingly not a peep of this riot anywhere on news sites.

What kind of people could know there are record setting murders and shootouts in one part of town and not do anything about it. Cancer spreads.
