A huge rescue operation and an international aid effort got underway Wednesday, less than 24 hours after much of Beirut was buried by rubble and choked by smoke in a colossal explosion Tuesday afternoon.

Lebanese health minister Hamad Hasan said 135 people have been killed and 5,000 injured in the explosion. Dozens of people are still missing.

Those figures look set to rise with hospitals overwhelmed and victims still trapped underneath debris.

"There is no word to describe the horror of the catastrophe that occurred in Beirut yesterday," Lebanese President Michel Aoun said during an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the Lebanese News Agency reported.

"I extend my heart and feelings to the families...and I ask God to heal the wounded, heal the broken hearts, and provide us with all the energy and determination to stand together to confront the painful burns that have scarred the face of Beirut."

Aoun thanked emergency workers and officials and vowed to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the deadly blast, which is still not clear.

Yes, apparently so. And most of this family from Lebanon are Christians, not muslims. But still think Israel is to blame.

..The problem in the middle east and the world ad hoc is Islam....

Indeed. Such populations in the mid-east are heavily indoctinated into Islam, actually by force when all is considered, as to not believe is more times than not meet with certain death.

There’s actually many in the world believe Israel is to blame for the unrest throughout the middle-east. They’re wrong but I do think those numbers will continue to grow. However the Islamic nations surely do.

Kind of reminds me of the Texas City, TX blast in 1947.

It’s amazing that they stored this in the city for 5 or 6 years. Why did they impound it and what did they intend to do with it? Why didn’t they process it into fertilizer for their farmlands? I know Lebanon is pretty dysfunctional, but some thing are just common sense.

There’s not even a remote possibility Israel would do something like this.

Hizbollah Terrorist leader Hassan Nasrallah (Nasar Allah be praised!!) threatened Israel’s Haifa refinery port a few years ago saying he would blast the whole Israeli port with similar, atomic type bombs killing many Jews as possible. Hmmmm all that stored “fertilizer” inside civilian areas. Looks like Hizbollah’s depot destroyed their own country instead.

Well, now the muslim world knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of something like 9/11.

I wonder when the dancing in the streets will begin?

Or is it a different story when THEY are the ones to suffer a catastrophe?

Mariner, I love your profile page.

And I agree with whatever you said.

On my cell phone I can’t tell what people have said to me.

But I do know that I am fully on board! LOL!

I was talking to a person from Lebanon and she said that it must have been an inside job. That they never expected the catastrophe. They didn’t know about the chemicals in there.

Just passing along some info that I heard.

A giant orange mushroom cloud was seen following the
detonation.

There was a large orange column of smoke rising above the
detonation. I would not term it a 'mushroom cloud'.

The shock wave provided a mushroom type shape, but it was
only there for a split second or so.

I first knew about the incident from a guy we were talking online at the time. He was in Cyprus and felt the blast. You can imagine how bad it was.

They impounded it from a distressed ship that had reached their port and seized the contents from a ‘sinking’ vessel. Why the officials refused to address the many warnings that the contents be taken elsewhere remains to be revealed......all that I know thus far is the Port authorities warned the city officials this would happen, up to 6 or 7 times and they have a document path to prove it.

One bomb on the Kaaba will prove their religion is worthless. No one dares complete the easy solution to proving this phony "religion" wrong. Any thoughts?

Quite the opposite, bombing Mecca would be used as proof that we are the Great Satan, intent upon destroying Islam and warring upon Allah.

I've spent quite a bit of time in the Mid-East, both deployed in Iraq & Afghanistan and on business trips to the Gulf states. While justifying political violence is easier with Islam than other faiths, most Muslims are trying to just live their lives in craphole countries. Extremist groups are fragmented and often fight each other more than try to strike the West.

Bomb the Kabaa, and you prove to general Muslim population that ISIS and other extremists were correct all along. Muslims around the world would feel obligated to fight The extremists and they and current governments would unify against the external threat and launch a real Holy War against the infidels. It would be violence, death, and carnage on a scale we haven't seen since WWII.

Correct to read: "...Muslims around the world would feel obligated to fight. The extremists and current governments would unify..."

A report I read said the shipment originated from a Georgian dealer, although the ship’s crew were Ukrainian.
FWIW, the photo of the men working on the warehouse door showed bags labelled “Nitroprill HD”. This I think is a rip-off of “Nitropril” which is an Australian brand. Nitropril is blasting grade AN not fertilizer.

And will those 300,000+ just end up starving to death in the street? No way that Beirut has the financial resources the US has. Or should I say had?
