CDC warns Congress of significant public health consequences if schools dont reopen in the fall
The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Congress on Friday of significant public health consequences if schools dont reopen in the fall.
Millions of children get nutritional and mental health services at schools, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told a House Select Subcommittee hearing on containing the coronavirus outbreak. He said school reopenings to be done smartly.
Its important to realize that its in the public healths best interest for K-12 students to get back into face-to-face learning, Redfield testified. Theres really very significant public health consequences of the school closure.
About 7.1 million kids get their mental health service at schools, he added. They get their nutritional support from their schools. Were seeing an increase in drug use disorder as well as suicide in adolescent individuals. I do think that its really important to realize its not public health versus the economy about school reopening.

Schools are also a great place to find infections early. Given enough testing.
Machiavellian? Nope, IMO, just good science.
“The consequences of preventing children from sharing germs/viruses portend an epidemic in the near future which will eclipse all recorded epidemics.”
Because you said?
Or, because of a few published and peer reviewed studies?
I’d like the links to those.
Right. School now is a frikin nutrition program.
The “Educators” will sue to stop the school year.
” Remind me again what food stamps are for. “
OK.
Food stamps are for supporting drug dealers.
A SNAP recipient gives his card to a dealer, for drugs worth half it’s value, who uses it to buy items to supply local stores.
When the card is renewed, the SNAP recipient again gets half it’s value in drugs and the drug dealer again resupplies the local stores.
It’s a double bonus for local stores: they get the SNAP payment for what they sell the dealer, and higher profits on what they buy from the dealer.
Bless our drug dealers, they make the economy work!
“The kids should go back to school without the masks. This whole scenario is so Hitleresque”.
That’s right. For the children not to be in school is a form of child abuse. ER cases of child abuse are way up.
My little 7 year old granddaughter who lives in a Wyoming county with no COVID cases told me that she hates masks because “I can’t breathe very good”. She is a little Tomboy and never complains about anything.
School food is nutritious????
Who knew?
“EVERY true liberal democrat was beyond willing to end these kids within the first 9 months of their existence. Theyd even help do it. Of course they dont give a F about other peoples children. Its not in their capacity to do so”.
Exactly!! The State is more important than the children.
My Local school district just agreed to a hybrid schedule this week, sending kids to school only two days, two days online, and now the teachers get a paid day off for the fifth day. Ridiculous! I wonder if there still time for them to reconsider and open five days a week and teach just like in previous years, but maybe this year actually teach now that everybodys me focused on what theyre doing. Oh, but this is an election year and they will not agree to even talk about anything like that until after the election. All the across the country they want to hold us hostage to their Political grievances.
If schools don’t reopen, how will counselors be able to encourage students to come out and/or cross-gender?
Breathing in oxygen is a God-given right. . .if He wanted to have people breathe in carbon dioxide he would have designed us that way. . .this is so wrong . . .it is child abuse and no child should be subjected to it. Follow the money on the masks. . .besides some have been tainted.
I hope they both lose.
Let them stay home, they're getting transphobia from their families.
Better get them back in school ASAP.
Yes, it is child abuse. It makes me sick...and mad as hell.
There are excellent counselors and then those who went into the profession already psychologically challenged . . .I remember from my undergrad and graduate days.
Which is why my solution would be government run “basic stables” stores where anyone can go in and get government cheese and flour and sugar and beans and milk and such. Nobody would have to starve, but there might be an incentive to work for better tasting food.
And most of the fraud would go away.
“So according to the all-knowing, all-powerful, all pontificating CDC:
School ISNT about education.
School IS about nutritional assitance.
School IS about receiving behavioral and emotional support.
I live downwind of a CAFO pig farm and the smell is about the same.”
Reverse psychology so I support keeping them closed?
Yeah, I assume most politicians oppose that because they can’t get a cut.
Also, SNAP cards could just require a signature to prevent most fraud.
But, again, it makes it hard to turn SNAP payments into political donations or bribes so...
But the bleeding heart liberal teachers don’t care about whats best for the kids. They are only think of themselves.
