Bye, boomer: the coming cull of workers over 50
Marketwatch ^ | July 30 2020 | By Brett Arends

Uh-oh. Those of us who remember when ’80s music was new had better start bracing ourselves for those big-box-store greeter jobs earlier than we expected.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that the jobs market is probably heading for a massive, rolling shakeout. And that means plenty of employers may be using the cover of COVID-19 to get rid of lots of expensive older workers.

Age discrimination in the jobs market, which is supposedly illegal, goes up in recessions. Some employers take the opportunity to ax experienced workers who are paid a reasonable wage, and replace them with cheap, desperate kids who will put up with anything.

I worked for an interior plant care company when I lived in Cleveland. The majority of employees were over 35 years old. 1. You had to pass a drug test. 2. You had to bust your keister without much supervision. Kids rarely lasted.

I fear the coming rebuttal Boomers are going to get from us Millennials will be great and terrible.

You should fear the fact that once we Boomers are gone, nobody and I mean NOBODY will know how to work.

Working part-time, I still had higher productivity than the snowflakes who worked full time. Then they wouldn’t like me because I come to work to WORK. Good luck.

No... Not Me... They told me just a couple of months ago that I was “essential!”

I too was part of the "essential" team. There were sixteen of us who each have done two 4 hour shifts per week. The remainder of the time we were "work from home" employees. And work we did! I spent all day, each day (when not physically at the office for my shift) glued to my laptop, answering email and preparing documents. I spent more time working than I did when I was at the office for 8 to 9 hours a day.

Luckily for me, I had informed my boss eight months ago that I would be retiring effective August 1st. I had no idea what was coming for us during the Spring of 2020. Today was my last day at the office. I am officially retired!

Older folks = less drama and show up for work. Between drug screens, background checks and E-Verify very few younger candidates Are passing muster.

I’m a boomer but a younger one. It was the older ones, the ones who were teens and early twenties in the 60’s.

They entered the corporate and political worlds and set about undermining every American institution. They’re evil plots are bearing fruit now.

GenX is a lost generation. They have had a very rough go of it. Boomers delayed retirement during the great recession blocking X and X got hammered at the same time in their prime earning years. Now comes this covid mess and they will be hammered again and early “retired” like so many Boomers were. X is small and will be passed over. I saw it before I left the corpocracy, millennials were being groomed to move up and X were sort of stuck. Not many of them were hired either in the oil business so there were just not so many of them.

The new sheriff in town is a millennial. They were pegged in the Fouth Turning to be the “Hero” generation. Hero for what and that they are is yet to be seen. So far I am not seeing much at all but button pushers. My son is at the leading edge of the millennials, he pretty much profanes all that is social media and popular though he is as savvy at it all as he wants to be but only when it serves him. His peer group is chronically unemployed though most are graduates with good degrees. So far he remains in high demand, he works and is good at what he does. He turns the lights on in the morning and off in the evening at work.

I am wondering if this covid thing is the crisis of this Secula talked about in the Fourth Turning. It looks like it is far from over and real or contrived it is a mess. An even bigger mess will be if biden is elected and I’m concerned about the real possibility of that. Allegedly smart people don’t “like” Trump’s manner enough to go ahead and vote for biden just out of spite. I’ve broken it off with one long time acquaintance because of that. Just foolish and ignorant of the facts.

By the way, it was not the Boomers that got us in the mess we are in. Blame the Greatest Generation. It was them who ushered in Civil Rights, and I am not saying changes were not needed, but they began all the real give aways and social programs that will drive us into the dust. LBJ said upon sighing the civil rights bill, “ This will have them niggers voting Democrat for the next hunnerd years.” and by god he was right.

I’ll be 68 in November; if I don’t find another job, it won’t be the end of the world, but I was planning on working for another year “or so”.

We’ll see what happens.

I hate my boomer generation...but its mostly the ones a bit older then me...the ones hitting 70 and above....they rioted and burned bras and draft cards and then got cushy govt jobs where they have been retired living on fat pensions for 15 yrs.....

they never even blush when they vote radical liberal....it doesn't bother their conscience at all to live at the largess of the govt taxpayers...for the govt they once hated and rioted against...

“the cultural decay began in the 60’s, far before any millennial was alive. Sure, the millennials have carried the torch... but the boomers were the original porn guzzling, coke snorting, divorce-ridden, tv junkies...”

The millennials have guzzled more porn, snorted more coke, divorced more spouses and watched more TV than baby boomers. That’s not surprising considering that millennials have an average IQ of 50 and can’t figure out the difference between a male and female.

We’re talking about large corporations.
Your lack of empathy for hard working employees in corporations that long ago left Ford’s and Carnegie’s ethics behind.

” why would anyone want to work at a place that wants average” . How arrogant and elitist..sometimes people have to work at places they may not want to for their families for food on their table for other limitations on them.most corporations do not offer bonuses.Oh yeah they should ,but many businesses do not offer bonuses and do not appreciate the “excellance”.

” if you make big profits you get rewarded”. I’ve worked in sales also for many years where the employee is rewarded directly for their efforts and excellence.

Wow are you out of touch with the majority of employees that do not work where their work directly impacts profits such as sales or other commission work or a smaller business where employees can be rewarded directly.

Many Americans work very hard and work very excellently and yet do not receive a portion of the profits of the organization for the work that they do. I do not blame them for staying where they are because I don’t know their personal situation and I certainly don’t shame them that it is their fault if they are not more successful or for whatever reason cannot move into another occupation or job.
