HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe agreed on Wednesday to pay $3.5 billion in compensation to white farmers whose land was expropriated by the government to resettle black families, moving a step closer to resolving one the most divisive policies of the Robert Mugabe era.
But the southern African nation does not have the money and will issue long term bonds and jointly approach international donors with the farmers to raise funding, according to the compensation agreement.
Two decades ago Mugabes government carried out at times violent evictions of 4,500 white farmers and redistributed the land to around 300,000 Black families, arguing it was redressing colonial land imbalances.
The agreement signed at President Emmerson Mnangagwas State House offices in Harare showed white farmers would be compensated for infrastructure on the farms and not the land itself, as per the national constitution.

Hey, if Puerto Rico and Dem rat-hole cities can get away with selling uber-risky bonds, why not Zimbabwe?!?
Isn’t that like a buck fifty in American dollars.
Well dang y’all beat me to it.
You are overinflating the worth of the Zim dollar. $3.5 billion Zim dollars will get you a wheel for your wheelbarrow. If you want the entire wheelbarrow, try $3.5 TRILLION Zim dollars.
Feed the local labor force from local resources. Of course, the fertilizer and pesticides need to come from China. At a high price.
It’s kind of like the old “company store” in the mining towns.
Couldn’t agree more, that is very fertile land.
Think of all the ag products that can be grown with automation and little human effort. Perfect for a corporate farm.
Mugabe the tyrant has been dictator for decades and the world does nothing. But we had to get rid of dictators like Sadaam Hussein, Egypt’s leader, Khaddafi, and Syria’s Assad. Next time they want us to play “let’s go get the evil dictator” maybe we should have second thoughts.
It’s not always easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys, that’s for sure.
Puerto Rico needs to go independent.
