The Seattle NHL team name will be the Seattle Kraken

The Seattle NHL team will be called the Seattle Kraken.

For months, fans have been debating what the name will be, with the Seattle Sockeyes often trending as the top pick.

The Seattle Kraken was also a fan favourite and ultimately became the top choice.

The announcement was made in front of nearly 300 construction workers Thursday morning who are building the new arena for the team.

“It’s only right and proper to announce the Kraken name, mark and colors here with the men and women working so hard and meeting every challenge to build our new home,” Seattle Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke said in a release.

“We were intentional every step of the way making this decision. We listened to our fans, thousands of them face-to-face and tens of thousands more on social media. We were determined to align with who we are as an organization and as a city and region.

I was hoping for The Screeching Sawants. Something to really put fear into opponents and reflect Seattle.

When are they going to change the name of Seattle? Chief Seattle was a slave owner after all. He and the Cherokee Nation have a lot of blood on their hands but no one’s talking about that.

Looks like a modern version of the Nazi SS (stormtroopers) insignia.

Do you realize that the Seattle Seahawks initials are “SS”?

If they want to go with Seattle Krakens, I nominate an alternative name, the “SK” which stands for “Seattle Kraperheads”.

"Kraken"......what a horrible name. So harsh and alien sounding.

Anyhow, folks will naturally start calling the team "Krakers"....and that will open up a whole new kan of worms.

Kraken- that's a good name.

What statement are they making by having a singular nickname?

I think they expect the team to be thought of as collectively representing one sea monster. I dislike those kinds of names (common in soccer, and moreso in other sports like basketball [e.g. Miami Heat]) as it doesn't allow an appelation for each individual player.

The closest hockey comparison I can think of is the Moscow Dynamo. They were started under Communism, so they have a better excuse.
