Blow to Erdogan as US boots Turkey out of F-35 strike fighter program

Turkey’s contribution to the F-35 fighter jets’ supply chain was suspended following its receipt of parts of the S-400 surface-to-air defense system last July.

But the system has not yet been made operational, although Turkey has also refused to give up the S-400 completely. It even tested its radar system in Ankara against some of its air force’s US-made F-16 fighter jets last November.

However, the activation of the S-400 missile system that was scheduled for April is still delayed. Turkey has also been banned by the US from ordering F-35s for its air force.

The only condition for Ankara to become a contributor again and feature in the F-35 list is to move the system outside the country because F-35s cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence gathering platform that might detect their stealth capabilities and harm the long-term security of the alliance by spying on the jets.

Turkey’s industrial engagement in the F-35 program brought a significant economic boost to the country, with 10 contributing companies supplying more than 900 parts worth about $12 billion.

Well, except for that whole German-Turkish Treaty of Friendship thing in 1941...

A quick glance at a map would answer why Turkey was included in NATO to begin with. It controls egress from the Black Sea Into the Med and blocked USSR from overland access to the Mideast oil fields. Since the fall of the USSR these considerations are less important, but still Turkey has a strategic location as we found out in our invasion Iraq. With the death of Kemalism their future as a western partner is clearly on the bubble.

HAHAHAHAHA.

You seriously posted a link to the Duffle Blog as a source?

It's like "The Onion" but for military culture.

In other words - it's all satire.

They were admitted to NATO and were a good member until recently

They were a major problem in the 70s and only useful for their proximity to Russian tropospheric dump zone and various Russian rocket ranges - even them they deliberately hindered more than they helped

Our F15s and F16s now carry an pod that detects stealth planes without using radar. If we have it, then the Russians have or will shortly have something similar - thus the limited stealth the 35 has is negated.

It’s future role may be something like a rear ward coordinator for a drone swarm or loyal wingman. It cannot dog fight with only 116 rounds. Its BVR air to air missiles are outranged by the Russian BVR missiles. As a bomb truck or a carrier of an external pod, it forfeits all stealth.

I remember watching as that tragic event unfolded in Cincinnati. I was fortunate to have been watching the only station to cover it at the time. If memory serves me, I think it was WKRP.

2. Look at the date of the article you posted. That was written when the F-35 flight control software was still being developed, and the F-35 was limited to 3G turns. Today it can pull sustained 9G turns, limited only by what the pilot can sustain.
...
LOL! It says the F35 is designed for BVR and that is why it lost to a WW I (yes, I) Red Baron Fokker.
