Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, believes "the most powerful weapon we have" against the novel coronavirus is wearing face coverings, washing hands and "being smart about social distancing."

"If we all rigorously did this, we could really bring this outbreak back to where it needs to be," Redfield told the Journal of the American Medical Association via video on Tuesday.

Coronavirus cases are surging across the U.S., from California to Texas to Florida. More than 3.4 million people in the country have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and over 136,00 people have died.

To Redfield, a major key to controlling the pandemic is wearing masks.

Immunity is the only way to defeat a virus. How do you want to get there? Fast or slow? Synthetic or natural?

What also should be noted is synthetic for a coronavirus may not be possible. None have worked before, most fail not in the creation of antibodies but at the critical time when the innoculated encounter the wild virus. Unfortunately no one wants to hear that part.

Does it mean “wiped out”? No, that’s not possible.

It’s a vague undefined term that allows them to keep continually moving the goalposts.

It doesn't look like they actually stopped testing, but they haven't ramped up testing the way we have. They hit about 70 tests per 100,000 people in late March and never really expanded much beyond that. We got a later start (thanks to contaminated CDC test kits), but we passed Germany's testing rate around April 20th and are now testing at something like 2-3x their rate:
