As Minnesota leaders pondered their next steps, it's not yet clear what other sources of funds they may tap.
Denied federal aid to help rebuild burned-out, vandalized businesses in the wake of riots that followed George Floyds killing, Minnesota leaders pondered their next steps Saturday.
But its not yet clear what other sources of funds they may tap.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Friday denied Gov. Tim Walzs request for nearly $16 million in aid to help rebuild and repair structures in Minneapolis and St. Paul, many of them left in ruins by the riots and fires that erupted during protests of Floyds May 25 death while in Minneapolis police custody.
On July 2, Walz had asked President Donald Trump to declare a major disaster for the state of Minnesota in his request to FEMA. More than 1,500 buildings were damaged by fires, looting and vandalism, racking up more than $500 million in damages, according to Walz. The $16 million would have been used to reimburse local governments for debris clearing, repair and rebuilding costs.
In a prepared statement, FEMA said Saturday that after a thorough review, the agency determined that the impact to public infrastructure is within the capabilities of the local and state governments to recover from.
On Saturday, Walzs spokesman, Teddy Tschann, said the governor had little to add to his Friday statement expressing disappointment with FEMAs denial. Tschann said Walz is considering appealing the decision, which he has 30 days to do.

Remember when we were kids and we did something wrong and got the stern talk from Mom/Dad? That’s what MN is feeling right now. That feeling that the days of bailouts and wink-wink from the Feds are over. I guarantee you that if riots happen after the Floyd trial - especially if the officers don’t get life in prison, both the Mayor and Governor will move their sorry asses to squash it.
Ha! Ha!
That’s sweet!
Can the President declare Walz to be a “major disaster” for the state of Minnesota and have him replaced?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, the people of MN are stuck with him.
It would be a true statement, though.
They can take it out of the reparations budget - i.e., fire 40% of state employees. :)
They could raise the taxes they levy against the businesses that were destroyed.
Black Lives Matter is flush with cash from corporate donations. Let Minnesota sue Black Lives Matter for reparations.
*snicker* It was said here and many other places while the ferals were looting and burning, Walz was gonna have his hand out looking for restitution after he kept the National Guard on a short leash. Seattle, Portland, they all shat the bed and expect someone else to clean up their messes.
Ancestry tried the Clinton Foundation? After all, that helped make Haiti what it is today. Maybe the receipt for Chelseas wedding dress would brighten up the place. And a slightly stained blue dress?
Nice war zone you got here, Governor. Be a shame if anything should happen to it.
If you want FEMA rebuilding aid you have to actually try to stop the violence.
I love this.
Looks towards the citizens with increased taxes.
I'll take that bet.
The state attorney has overcharged the officers with the intention that there's no way they can be convicted of those charges. This was done deliberately to get them acquitted and sparking riots. The mayor and governor will do nothing of substance to stop the next round of riots.
Not gonna happen bub. Money talks. If the state knows they’re not going to get federal money, then they’re gonna move mountains to prevent riots again.
What can Tim Walz get for his kidneys, liver, and lungs? That might help the Minnesota budget a little.
He was just following order from Beijing. Perhaps he should ask Beijing to help out.
I disagree, but we will see, that’s for certain.
I think they have lost control of their monster and may be afraid to (try to) reign it in.
I have no idea how long it is going to take to hold the trial and reach a verdict.
What? I thought it was a peaceful protest? Da cnn said so.
Wait until truckers stop delivering food to Minneapolis when all of the police are fired. Minneapolis hasn’t seen real trouble yet.
There goes Minneapolis’ federally funded revitalization plans.
