NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley will skip President Donald Trumps presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in August due to coronavirus concerns, a spokesman for the senator confirmed on Monday.
The 86-year-old Iowa Republican has attended each of his partys conventions since he was first elected to the Senate in 1980. His decision not to travel to Florida for this years event underscores broader concerns about holding mass gatherings as coronavirus cases there surge.
Im not going to go because of the virus situation, Grassley told reporters on Monday, according to a report in the Des Moines Register.
The bulk of the Republican convention was moved from North Carolina after the states Democratic governor, Roy Cooper, would not commit to allowing a full convention because of pandemic concerns.
Some 330 delegates will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 22-24 to nominate Trump as the Republican candidate to take on Democrat Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 election. The more than 2,000 remaining delegates will perform a ceremonial vote on Aug. 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida, to confirm the nomination, according to the Republican National Committee.
The decision to relocate to Florida was made prior to the states recent spike in coronavirus cases, which have grown from 667 new cases on June 1 to more than 10,000 new cases on Monday.

That’s my statement and I’m sticking to it.
What. He might catch a cold?
It’s time to RETIRE old man
Each of us needs to do what each of us feels is best for us aka me.
And ah no he fears may contract CV19 and die you moron.
I have no problem with people of that age deciding that they want to be cautious. It makes sense for him to change his plans.
Forcing me to wear a mask, work from home, stop shopping. etc. is totally different. Forcing healthy people to cancel their plans is tyranny.
Everyone has the freedom to determine what they will regarding the covid issues, including what they believe is or not a risk.
He’s old. He’s scared.
If our politicians in DC are afwaid of a widdle viwus, how are they going to tackle the big issues? He needs to leave.
Probably a good idea for someone in their 80s. Ive been to a convention before. No big deal to miss it. We know who the nominee is. Just a bunch of speeches that can be watched at home if one is interested.
Reasonable decision for an 86-year-old
I understand Grassley’s concern about the virus with him being an older and probably more fragile individual. However, if he cannot fulfill the duties and obligations of his office, he owes it to his constituents to resign. For the same reason, Joe Biden should drop out of the race.
He has been in office for 50 years and decides to hold up Trump’s picks. He should resign from all committees and retire.
He is next in line to be President after Nancy
At his age, that is a wise choice.
look at the numbers - the one group covid is decidedly lethal for is ppl over 70
Ever seen an 86 year old with your waddle wirus?
Clearly not. Otherwise you would not make a statement like that. Grow up.
He is over 80. Do you really think it would be smart of him to go to Florida?
Given his age, he’s at high risk of contracting and dying from that “widdle viwus”.
He needs to explain more. He is a politician whose response to irrational fears, if any, can affect us. If he has no co-morbidities and is getting his view of how dangerous the virus is from CNN, we need to know because it’s our business as well as his.
