Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Tuesday said the federal government has a responsibility to protect statues and monuments of historical figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Christopher Columbus.
Speaking at a press conference in Wilmington, Del., the former vice president defended monuments dedicated to past presidents who owned slaves. Biden made the case that those public statues should be preserved, while monuments to Confederate leaders should be removed peacefully by local officials.
“The idea of comparing whether or not George Washington owned slaves or Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, and somebody who was in rebellion committing treason trying to take down a union to keep slavery, I think there’s a distinction there,” Biden said.
“The idea of bringing down all those Confederate monuments to Confederate soldiers and generals who strongly supported secession and maintaining slavery and going to war to do it, I think those statues belong in museums, they don’t belong in public places," he continued.
"I think with regard to those statues and monuments, like the Jefferson Memorial, there’s an obligation that the government protect those monuments because they’re different. That’s a remembrance, it’s not dealing with revering somebody who had that view. They had much broader views. They may have had things in their past that were now and then distasteful, but that’s a judgment.”
The former vice president argued that local governments should lead in the peaceful removal of statues glorifying the leaders of the Confederacy. But he said that he understands the “anger and anguish” of those who would like to see them toppled by protesters.
“I can understand the anger and anguish that people feel by having for years and years been under the statue of Robert E. Lee if you’re an African American,” Biden said.

It’s pretty clear that’s what Trump’s position already is. He can poke holes all over that position of Biden’s because all the Dem mayors and Governors are already failing to act. The problem is that the press either ignores or twists everything Trump does or says, whereas Biden immediately gets shot to the top of the page.
Trump needs to make more of a presence. I don’t know how, but he’s got to do it...and beyond Twitter.
Trump is getting only criticism for this and he or his managers haven’t struck back. Whoever is advising him is very passive.
Biden will now say it was his idea to begin with, because the press actually covers Biden and ignores Trump. Trump has got to be more visible.
So they didn’t like him going to St. John’s in DC and holding up a Bible? So what? He should do more things like that. He’s just not coming forward and being visible enough, but a lot of that is the press. So make it so they have to look at him, if only to hate him.
People are feeling leaderless now. I know Trump devotees are fine, but he needs more than this group to win. And we’re in big trouble if he doesn’t win.
For Pete’s sake, get realistic. The press has buried and Trump and he has to get out and be visible, even if he has to fight for it. We like him here but it needs more than us in the know to get him elected.
Biden gets coverage for anything, and before you know it, the press will be attributing anything Trump has thought of to Biden.
The other thing this means to me, if Biden’s Dem handlers let him say this, is that the radical left, BLM wing of the Dem party may be not a big seller among what used to be called soccer moms, and they’re actually looking for security and stability. The Dems can’t do it, of course, and they don’t want to, but they might use this to get votes.

Robert E. Lee was a relative (by marriage) of George Washington. He was a hero of the US-Mexican war, and stopped the John Brown insurrection.
His battle tactics are still studied today, at respected military academies like West Point.
He became a Confederate officer because he considered Virginia to be his “country”. Until the end of the Civil War, that was a reasonable and honorable thing to do. And we have lost something by changing from “the United States are” to “the United States is”.
Finally, President Eisenhower considered Robert E Lee to be one of the four greatest Americans.

What are future West Point cadets going to do when it is time to study Lee’s battle tactics? Interesting comment. I think Trump has come out and said similar comments as Biden. And thus, your point is, as there is no difference between the two candidates on this issue, Trump is going to have to look for another law and order issue that shows the difference between the two.
