A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.
It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.
The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.
While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.
As it's new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

This is a revolution people, this is the early stage of warfare, this is for all the marbles.
Influenza viruses preferentially attach to certain cell surface receptors that are most commonly found in birds and low in the human respiratory tract. Humans normally catch influenzas that are adapted to a variant of the receptor that is found in the upper respiratory tract. So humans do not easily catch bird flu viruses.
Pigs have both forms of the receptor in the upper respiratory tract. So a bird flu virus can infect pigs through the bird-like receptor and adapt in the pig to infect through the human-like receptor. At that point, the influenza can easily infect humans.
Humans can catch bird flus, but not readily. Once a human catches a bird flu, they can get VERY sick; some bird flus have a 60% death rate in humans. Bird flus are not very contagious between humans, because of the fact that they infect the lower respiratory tract.
So, what it looks like happened here is that a bird flu infected pigs and became adapted to be able to easily infect humans and be able to spread person to person.
This process actually happens fairly often, all over the world. Bird culls (usually of chickens) happen on a fairly regular basis in order to stop bird flus from spreading.

These bad viruses evolve in the wet market/slum conditions found in china, and they spread around the world. Once they are in “Western” populations, they “regress toward the mean” and become less of a problem, but only after they have done great harm to us. This is the fault of the horrible chinese culture, wherein they eat and sleep with anything that moves.
Either they adapt into the modern “western” culture, or we build a wall around them and kill anything trying to get out.
That is the simple solution.
Would it be considered cultural appropriation for me to propose welding the doors shut on China?
