MUMBAI/ISLAMABAD - Unilever will drop the word fair from its Fair & Lovely brand of skin lightening products which are popular in South Asia but have long been criticised for promoting negative stereotypes against people with darker skin.
Companies face a mounting backlash on social media in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Products marketed for skin lightening have a huge market in South Asia due to a societal obsession with fairer skin tones, but those notions are being questioned more frequently as perceptions change.
Johnson & Johnson this month said it would stop selling skin-whitening creams which are popular in Asia and the Middle East.
We recognise that the use of the words fair, white and light suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we dont think is right, and we want to address this, Sunny Jain, president of Unilevers beauty and personal care division, said in a statement.
Unilevers Fair & Lovely brand dominates the market in South Asia. Similar products are also sold by LOréal and Procter & Gamble.
We are making our skin care portfolio more inclusive ...a more diverse portrayal of beauty, Hindustan Unilever Chairman Sanjiv Mehta said in a separate statement.
In India, fairness products have long been endorsed by leading Bollywood celebrities, as well as other popular youth icons.
Advertisements have regularly featured two faces showing skin tone transformation, as well as shade guides to show improvement.

UnFair!
Maybe they can rename it “Face Mud”.
Yet when we try to be fair by using blackface, they don’t like that either....
In honor of Mitt Romney they are changing it to White and Delightsome.
Darker skinned people try to lighten their skin while lighter skinned people tan to get darker.
Is Black Opal okay?
They’re going to call it “White and Right”?
Notice they aren’t dropping the product itself, so if *you* happen to subscribe to the ‘singular idea of white/ light skinned beauty’ they will happily sell it to you. In fact they wish that you do so they could sell you more if it.
Wonderful. More Virtue Signaling! Just what we need!
When is somebody going to realize that no body gives a rat’s a$$ for this nonsense?
Darker skinned people try to lighten their skin while lighter skinned people tan to get darker.
Indeed.
As an agnostic, I think if there is a God, He created us and gave us free will just for the amusement factor...
So they'll finally have products that white people can use to darken their skin! Yay!
Oh wait, they already had those. Governor Northam of VA used them. It gets non-Democrats cancelled though, so I'll skip it.
In honor of Mitt Romney they are changing it to White and Delightsome.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Are they keeping Dark and Dangerous and Black and Beautiful?
Why how horrible! Eliminating a product that, for some people, is their ONLY HOPE for joining the group of the White Privileged and obtaining all those benefits that accrue to White Privilege.
Now those people won’t be able to look White and get the best jobs, get free college, pick money off trees and get a free pass in traffic stops.
What a horrible injustice! We demand an end to Melininophobia!
Liberty and freedom are such difficult concepts for Rats and Socialists
You don't want to start any blasphemous rumors.
Yeah, I wonder why?, eyeroll.
