In the wave of cancellations sweeping America, Confederate statues have been particularly hard hit.
They have been graffitied, assaulted, and torn down, while authorities rush to remove them.
For his part, President Donald Trump has been a steadfast defender of the statues and other forms of recognition of the Confederacy. He has come out in favor of preserving the names of military bases named after Confederate generals and pointedly said that we should build on our heritage rather than tear it down.
Conservatives tend to think the same way. They reflexively oppose politically correct campaigns to destroy anything giving offense.
They fear where the slippery slope of woke iconoclasm will lead first its Jefferson Davis, ultimately George Washington.
They value tradition and worry we are trashing part of our history.
This impulse, though, is a mistake. Confederate statues and symbols deserve to be reevaluated, and often mothballed.

Time to stand up has passed.
In California, they just tore down statues of Miguel de Cervantes (writer of Don Quixote) and Fr Junípero Serra, founder of 9 missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco in the 1700s. Fr Serra's represented in Statuary Hall as one of the two statues representing CA at the US Capitol.
We don’t want to forget our history: good and bad. Don’t want to repeat the bad, the evil.
Don’t give the goathumpers any ideas!
I gave up on it years ago.
USSC already is. I fear that if it does accept a 2AMD case the Roberts Court with Gorsuch may well simply read the 2nd out of the Constitution and we will all scream but it will be accepted by ALL the lawmakers and enforcers as the Law of the Land and Roberts will be a name to be remembered for many many years. Fame is intoxicating, even for a less than reliable Justice.
ANTIFA is the Americanized version of the TALIBAN who obliterated historical monuments and statues.
So for all of the ‘WOKE’ people who think toppling statues is cool, just keep in mind who your fellow travelers are.
I get your point. I have no appreciation for the cause of the South, but...what I do completely appreciate is that the terrible time of the Civil War, fought by both North and South MADE our country what it is.
It is PART of us, both good and bad.
And I have alway felt that each of us is who WE are is a result of good and bad elements.
A key difference between us and the Left is, the Left thinks evil can be eradicated by erasing the memory of it.
Conservatives believe that the best guard against evil is to be on watch for it, and to do that, we must recognize it and know it.
I didn't assume you did. It is even more disturbing that they are willing to eat their own.
Makes me wonder what they have in mind for us?
Yes that’s ironic isn’t it. This moron couldn’t see a day ahead. and still we do nothing. The dollar bill will be replaced soon.
only reason it might not be is because most of these idiots don’t even know who’s on it
Spot on.
The cause was states rights and you should care deeply.
If you believe this, you don’t get to cry about the Left tearing down those statues of Washington, Jefferson, Columbus, etc. You giving them the inch actively emboldened them.
This is pathetic, cave in, dreck from the National Review. (Though not a big surprise coming from these cool jerks based in DC and NY)
I have the same heartfelt view of the Southern cause that Ulysees Grant expressed in his memoirs.
I got sick of it after 3 semesters in HS studying the US Civil War. But it did happen even though the US got only around 20% of all the slaves taken
So, like rich the biotch?
While we vote in present day rapists and pedos. They should release who used the sex offender fund in congress. Guess what, leaders aren’t sinless. Most in DC worship satan.
Notice how the limp-wrister, kneeling coward makes no mention of what the “Confederacy” actually represented...seceding from the “union” under the US Constitution and returning to the Articles of Confederation and...most importantly for those states that fought the Federal Leviathan that were destroying state sovereignty...a return to the nation-state status.
Right or wrong, for good or for bad, the states that joined the union had the right to secede. As Jefferson said (to paraphrase), “Let them. They’ll come running back.”
With the 20/20 vision of hindsight, we can see that the Confederacy was very wise to fear what the Federal Leviathan was becoming...because it has become that tyrannical ruling class that our Founding Fathers tried to prevent.
