House to vote to make Washington D.C. the 51st state

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats controlling the House have slated a vote next week to make the District of Columbia the 51st state, an issue that they say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.

Next Friday’s vote, if successful, would pass a D.C. statehood bill for the first time in the House, but the legislation faces insurmountable opposition in the GOP-controlled Senate. It comes even as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced delays in the consideration of most other legislation. More than enough lawmakers are officially backing the bill for it to pass. In 1993, the Democratic-controlled Congress defeated a D.C. statehood bill by an almost 2-1 margin.

The only damn reason the Dems want this is for more Senate AND house seats this is ridiculous!!! Trump NEEDS to transfer entire government departments across the country, if these asshats don’t want to go they lose their jobs!! DC has become a sewer Grenell has discussed this with Trump throughly and I PRAY he does this, it is the ONLY WAY to disband the deep state!!

One needs to ask Nancy why she didn’t have the house pass this bill during the first year of bh0’s presidential administration? Chuckie Schumer ran the Senate Dim’s majority and bh0 would have had to sign it. Naw, just a pretend vote because she knows it won’t get through the senate or be signed by the President.

This is an issue, if they get Biden and the Senate they will immediately pass this to give themselves 2 more Senators. In hindsight I’m surprised they didn’t try it in 2009.

Hey troll. Support your argument.

You first. You're the one who said you can't make a state out of a city. What says you can't?

I think this Senate would pass a DC Statehood bill in a heartbeat.

I don’t think it requires a signature by the President. The language is “New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress”.

Just as the President does not sign proposed Amendments, which are a joint project of the Congress and the States, it does not appear that admitting a State is an act of legislation.

I DO think a DC statehood would require the consent of Maryland, but I have no doubt that it would be forthcoming.

Were this to happen (which I now think is quite likely), Chicago, Detroit and Portland OR would certainly follow. I doubt that California would consent to lose SF or LA, and I’m certain NY would never consent to NYC Statehood. However, Illinois, Michigan and Oregon might well be pleased to be rid of their Leftist cesspools.

Pelosi is worried about the Electoral College. The Democrats need Puerto Rico to be a state, too. Look out for a push to get Ontario admitted to the Union, whether Ontario wants to do that or not.

You may be right that the President approval is not required.

However I can’t imagine Republican Senators voting for it, in any case McConnell will not allow it to be brought up.

I don’t know if Maryland need be consulted. I have been opposed to retro-ceding the district into Maryland as that would prevent even the election of RINO governors in the state, but that would be an acceptable solution, certainly far preferable to this shit and we may have to go for it to prevent this which seems certain to pass the next time rats have both Houses.

I’d prefer of course that they be told to pound sand and like it, never should have given them electors either. And what happens to those electors if they are given statehood? All statehood proposals have suggested the District remains but it is reduced to a small area around the White House and Capitol but the 23rd would still grant them electors.

Lincoln signed the Cowrin Amendment, just signifying his unnecessary approval.

Well that’s a relief. Last thing we need is for another state to give 4 more electoral votes to the Democrats.

DC is established constitutionally as a federal district and therefore any attempt at statehood would be unconstitutional.

I was going to say that it might need a constitutional vote for that!!

And a small one at that. At least as far as population actually living within the district. And as the federal leviathan continuously grows, residential space is ever being gobbled up.

Well give the Dems a few more White House runs and their congress and it will be huge!
