oe Laino, 71, stood near the Christopher Columbus statue in South Philadelphias Marconi Plaza on Saturday while leaning on a baseball bat.
A woman nearby held up a sign saying Stand Up, South Philly Wont Stand Down."
And another man, who declined to give his name, stood close to the statue while holding a rifle one of at least two men in the plaza carrying guns.
Thomas Easterday, 50, was among the crowd of about 100 people milling around the marble Columbus figure. He said the goal of the gathering was simple.
Protecting the statue from these rioters who want to take it down, he said.

I have some Italian friends up in Philly.
My advice to vandals is - dont go anywhere near there if you enjoy solid foods.
Yeah, that headline is rather misleading.
I agree. Using the word “surround” leaves it open to interpretation.
Yup.. I have Italian family in Philly.
Messing with the Goomba’s in South Philly is a big mistake.
This makes me very happy. Our statue in Manhattan is 75 ft tall so there’s no worry about it being toppled but if de Blasio decides to remove it I will be there and I will be very hard to get rid of.
And me and my friends wouldn’t be there to talk to anrifa or blm, we would be there to hurt them.
This is great news
I had a feeling youd be in Philly yourself by now.
Since the state and city governments melt when protesters aka rioters gather, why shouldn’t citizens rise up and protect our heritage?
(When they're done there, tell them to go make a brief baseball visit to that idiot mayor they have in Philly.)
There’s blacks only a few miles from my mother’s house and I don’t trust them. And I don’t trust antifa as I think they could pop up anywhere in the five boroughs. I need to be near her.
So far Staten island is the only borough that’s not burning because they know attacking a few hundred thousand italian-americans is not the smartest thing.
And honestly there’s no Subway here and the bridge is $18 :-)
But I womt take a chance. God bless those people in Philly
*Columbus didnt discover America he never set foot in North America!
During four separate trips that started with the one in 1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts.
But he didnt reach North America, which, of course, was already inhabited by Native Americans, and he never thought he had found a new continent.
You may also remember that it is believed that Norse explorer Leif Erikson reached Canada perhaps 500 years before Columbus was born, and there are some who believe that Phoenician sailors crossed the Atlantic much earlier than that.
wishing good health to you and your Mom
I have an Italian architect friend originally from Genoa. The highlight of her career was being involved in the 2001 restoration of Christopher Columbus house there. Although it was mostly rebuilt after a French bombing, it is a source of tremendous pride.
Columbus is one thing. Go after Rocky and it’s on!
In 1930 the US gave Iceland a statue of Erikson for their 1000th year as a country. It’s out front of the Hallgrimskirkja.
Hey thanks that was nice :)
We’ll be good I think.
There’s a lot of guys I know hoping they show up and there’s a lot of Italians between my mom’s house and obama’s sons.
Well we’re not Italians. We’re Americans with Italian last names.
We all just kind of settled in the same place :)
Wow that’s awesome.
I must claim ignorance on the French bombing episode.
When did that happen?
