Washington (CNN)Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced on Thursday plans to remove a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from Richmond's historic Monument Avenue, a move that comes amid a national reckoning with America's complicated racial history. "That statue has been there for a long time. It was wrong then, and it's wrong now. So we're taking it down," Northam, a Democrat, said during a news event in Richmond. Northam said he would be directing the Department of General Services to remove the statue "as soon as possible" and it will go into storage while they "work with the community to determine its future." "Make no mistake, removing a symbol is important but it's only a step. It doesn't mean problems are solved. There are still monuments of inequalities that exist in our commonwealth and in this country," the governor said, calling for change and healing.

That’s it seems, nobody seems to be saying he can’t, nobody is filing a lawsuit to halt it.

You would think such a thing would require a vote by the legislature or something. Can any Governor just, on a whim, snap his fingers and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars relocating a statue for grandstanding purposes?

I think it’s either State owned or on State property. So, in this case, he can do it.

Not exactly a de-escalation move.

It’s a two-fer. An effort to erase the demonicRAT Parties history of slavery, racism and white supremacy AND an effort to troll President Trump, Conservatives and FReepers to come to the defense of the man who led the effort to allow demonicRAT controlled States to perpetuate slavery, racism and white supremacy. Pretty shrewd.

Actually, Fremont. Down the street from the troll. And next to the hot dog stand.

To be fair, that’s on private property.

There is a statue of, I believe Nathan Bedford Forrest, somewhere in Tennessee that’s in a very public spot along a highway, but is ultimately on private property, and the Democrats on the local government have been seething for a long time in impotent rage about the fact that they can’t do anything about it because it’s on private property.

I know that. But I wasn’t aware a Governor could single-handedly remove long-standing monuments on state property. If the next Governor in 2022 says “put it back,” does it just go right back up? Then the next can remove it again?

It is a trap.Biden’s first attack on POTUS was the Charlottesville rally.(fake news narrative)
The left wants a redo to refresh the images for campaign ads.Biden’s internal polls on black support must be horrendous. “White supremacists”, a species where the media demand far outstrips the limited supply will be aided by FBI and Soros actors to flock to the removal site.Provoke a confrontation ,make up the fake news from there.
It’s a trick just like the mandatory masks (that Northam just announced as mandatory)cloaking the identity of Antifa rioters.

I concur. It’s a trap. Let’s hope President Trump doesn’t step into it like certain FReepers already have.

As a result, all black children will have devoted fathers, drugs will disappear from black neighborhoods. Study groups will replace hanging out on the street. No more dropping out. Al this just the beginning.
Who knew it would be this simple.

Lee is a hero of mine. He should be seen as an honorable man in a turbulent period. To a large degree, Lee and equally Grant, are responsible for a clean ending to the War Between the States. The nightmare of years of bloody, low-intensity but continual, guerrilla warfare was a real optional ending. The little that developed shows that.

No, by removing a statue of Robert E. Lee as a physical reminder that people of opposite sides of a view, or even a war, can show dignity and respect is an important thing we are losing.

Other opinions may differ.

My guess is it will be moved elsewhere. There is a confederate War Memorial in Richmond. Are they going to dig them up and move them out of town as well?

I know. That was a ridiculous comment. What should happen is a lot of the good people in Virginia who are law-abiding gun owners should surround the statue and not let it be taken. That’s what should have happened two years ago and three years ago.

Too much typing and talking and not enough action

No disrepect to Robert E. Lee.

I'm just doing what I can to remind people of the demonicRAT roots of racism, slavery and white supremacy.

It's a tough job. I've been doing it for 24 years now and I'm not sure I've made any progress.

At least not here on FR.

I'm sorry it hurts some people's feelings but it must be done.

My opinion differs. But, I don’t think it’s relevant to this situation.

This is pure baiting. They want to have a big show down between gun toting “Confederate” racists and the “black great band children of slaves.”

We could write the headlines today.

I am sure the white sheets are being starched by the left today. If no klan shows up, they will produce some.

This isn’t about Lee. This is about identifying a target that will outrage many in VA, and drilling into it. Watch, there will be a “band of patriots” who will go out some night, toss chains around it and pull it down. They will want a well orchestrated version of a Saddam Statue moment.

That’s how I would do it if I were them. I am not them, and I think this is stupid.

We know that is not going to happen.

The only thing that can be done now is to use occasions like this to remind people of the demonicRAT roots of slavery, racism and white supremacy.

The city of Crewe (near Newport News) has requested it.
The white Governor stepping down to promote the black LT Governor would be more WOKE ,but that’s just my thought.Forget the fact 2 women accused him of rape last year. That would only hurt the resume if you are GOP.
Funny putting up the Arther Ashe statue and renaming the Boulevard Arther Ashe Blvd last year didn’t heal enough. No word yet if we can tear down the new Maggie Walker statue the next black on white murder in Richmond.

Lee is dead. The statue is a lump of metal. Taking it down accomplishes nothing. This governor was in blackface. He is still alive. The decent thing for him to do would be to say the following: “Some have asked me to remove the statues of Robert E. Lee. Instead, I admit my racist past and hereby resign my office as governor.”

But it won’t happen.

Yep. Northam’s spending like $500,000 (or removal alone, not counting the future relocation/installation costs) to ultimately, probably move a statue a few miles down the road. Truly racism is canceled.
