All four former officers involved in George Floyd's killing now face charges

CNN)The former Minneapolis Police officer who pressed his knee into George Floyd's neck was charged with second-degree murder and the three other officers on scene during his killing were charged with aiding and abetting, according to court documents. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison's official announcement of the charges is expected to come Wednesday afternoon, more than a week after Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis. The killing has sparked nationwide protests that call for the end to police violence against black citizens. Derek Chauvin, who had his knee pressed into Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, had previously been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The new second-degree murder charge says that he killed Floyd "without intent to effect the death of any person, while committing or attempting to commit a felony offense ... namely assault in the third degree," according to an amended complaint. Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Keung, who helped restrain Floyd, and Tou Thao, who stood near the others, were not initially charged. Lane, 37, Kueng, 26, and Thao, 34, are now charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Yep, and one of the good things that could come from this terrible thing is people might start intervening and cops might start thinking twice-—it’s not like Floyd was the first person to be unjustifiably killed by police.

I don’t buy that the other officers are not responsible because Chauvin was senior. If they know they that someone subdued, in custody, is in medical distress, they have a duty to act.

Speak up, say, this man is not breathing, I am checking his pulse, he does not have a pulse, get off him, we need to start CPR.

Hard to see how kneeling on someone who subsequently dies could be 2nd-degree murder while shooting someone dead (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Justine_Damond) is 3rd-degree murder.

Well, given that this trial surely won't start until after the election what purpose would that serve?

I thought that also but I do still feel that they should all be charged.

I agree...but the charges have to be appropriate for the crimes.

I think the Asian officer who was the “cover” officer......who’s job was to face away from arrest and keep bystanders from entering the arrest zone....that officers will not be convicted.

Benjamin Crump put the hammer down today, “demanding” the other three be charged before Floyd’s memorial tomorrow. So Ellison obeyed and who wouldn’t considering the country has been under siege for days. We all know if they had not been charged as demanded, our streets would be right back to day one. This will become an issue in the trials.

They want them acquitted of the higher charges so they can get more riots.

Which begs the question, how fair will their trial be?

Pretty fair. The one guy is on video murdering their suspect and they knew and did nothing. It’s pretty obvious.

If they wanted more riots, they would not have arrested the other three today. The cities would have burned all over again tonight.

Well their plan may be that but this trial will take months - past election day. And everything they do is about elections day.

“Yep, and one of the good things that could come from this terrible thing is people might start intervening and cops might start thinking twice..”

I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a CCL instructor here in Illinois. I asked if, hypothetically of course, a CCL carrier had used lethal force against that cop if it would have been legally justified.

He said that, hypothetically, it would be. It wouldn’t be smart but it would be legally justified.

"The other three officers being charged is so wrong the officer with his knee on the neck was the SENIOR officer what the hell were the other officers supposed to do against the SENIOR officer??"

You've got to be kidding? At some point, common sense has to kick in when the guy is repeatedly saying I can't breath. If you get off him, I don't see him jumping up and resisting arrest right?

What you are saying is akin to a platoon of Marines patrolling in Fallujah and the platoon commander (An Lt) just starts indiscriminately killing people along the way as their patrolling and everyone else says, well, he was the senior person on the scene. That won't cut it at your court martial. That cop just standing there had to grow some stones, he definitely saw what was going on and did nothing....

No offense to the asshole who wouldn’t take his knee off the perp, but the upshot of this is that police in your community will NOT detain perps of color. Read Marx and Engels: No response, no policing, no law, no order: Just how commies like it to foment anarchy, misery, and revolution.

Most of the minority looters that were arrested in our county had bail ranging from 10K to 50K. A typical shoplifting charge is no more than a couple grand at most.

since their police manual instructs them that the knee on the neck is the way to restrain someone on drugs,

Is this true? Even if the suspect is already cuffed?

This is a quick video of the officers trying to get Floyd in the police vehicle. Two on the drivers side and two on the passenger side. After a few seconds the two officers on the drivers side close the door and go the passenger side. That is when Floyd was taken to the ground and held. There were other videos showing the event but I can't find them on the net now. May have been removed.

Floyd was fighting getting into the police vehicle. He was in somewhat but not entirely. Finally was pulled to the pavement and held for the medical group to get there to subdue him with meds.
