Trump considering a move to invoke Insurrection Act
NBC News ^

Posted on 06/01/2020 3:48:26 PM PDT by MNDude

President Donald Trump could announce as early as Monday night that he’s invoking a 213-year-old federal law that would allow him to deploy active-duty U.S. troops to respond to protests in cities across the country, according to four people familiar with the decision.

The military police forces would come from Fort Bragg in North Carolina and possibly Fort Belvoir in Virginia and could arrive in Washington within hours, these people said.

Trump’s decision to invoke the Insurrection Act, adopted in 1807, to deploy troops comes as his frustrations mount over the protests that have followed the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed in police custody last week in Minneapolis. The people familiar with his decision said he was angry Sunday night at the destruction protestors caused in Washington, particularly the vandalization of national monuments

“They were confined to an inner city.”

No. They were simultaneously in multiple cities all across the country and in So. California they spread beyond L.A.. I know, we lived through them. Same in NYC area. Altogether they were far bigger and wider than these riots have been.

“We did it during the LA Riots in 1992.”

Did what? National Guard yes. But federal military troops? O.K. you are right. But I think the riots were bigger then.

Yes Trump needs to do this. Look at Covid it was said Trump waited too long to act so no matter what, he will savaged for his decisions. Unlike Covid something physical can be done to stop it.

>> Not a good move. Leave it to governors and national guard. Even in the worst 1960s riots I don’t think the insurrection act was brought out. <<

You didn’t bother to check out a bloody thing before judging the President, did you? It was invoked after Hurricane Hugo (1989) and the Los Angeles - Rodney King riots (1992), and was even amended in 2006 to clarify that it should have been used after Hurrican Katrina (2005): “During the crucial hours that followed the hurricane’s landfall, Governor Blanco asked President Bush to “send everything you have got.” However, the Governor refused to relinquish control of the state National Guard troops to the President. Moreover, Governor Blanco did not want federal troops entering the area to assist with law enforcement.”

In fact, the media’s labelling it as “The Insurrection Act” is itself political mischief. The current act is called, “Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order.”

Actually, the disgusting thing is that the Insurrection Act of 1807 is not what Pres. Trump would invoke, but rather the “Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order Act” which superceded it in 2007.

He is provoking them. Showing them who owns the streets of DC. They really, really screwed up when they vandalized the monuments and you can see POTUS is pissed over it.

Partner, our POTUS has all rights given to him by our Constitution to invoke Troops to stop destruction of national monuments.

"The Giant Sixth Grade Brain Political Journalists" can cry all they want but our POTUS has all rights and the Journalists have no rights whatsoever.

Some of the states and municipalities have not, unfortunately. I understand the concern, tho.

I f Trump does anything next we will hear he is playing dictator and stopping free expression of people.

Using it won't eliminate peaceful protests.

He'll look weak if the rioting continues much longer.

And, it's the right thing to do for business owners.

[I agree. It’s only Blue areas that are getting destroyed with the Blue leaders all cheering it on. There’s an old military adage: if the enemy is shelling its own positions do nothing.

Trump should just let it burn, wait for the suburban white Democrats and liberal-leaning Independents to cry uncle and beg him for help. Then Trump makes his move. But not until they’ve suffered enough first. ]

Doesn’t work that way. People think Trump is responsible. They’re not up on the Posse Comitatus Act. If he’s going to be held responsible anyway, then he should use Federal resources and get this resolved. Bush wasn’t responsible for Katrina’s aftermath. He was held responsible anyway. There’s a lesson in that.

Curfews seem to do exactly squat when dealing with Antifa. Curfews only hold law abiding citizens at home while mobs destroy their towns and homes. If we are at war, the government needs to let its citizens defend themselves without fear of consequence ... especially when those who are employed to protect us are not doing what they were hired to do

Remember the riots that occurred in the City of St. Louis in 2014 when Saint Michael Brown attacked the police in Ferguson.

We need to get out the pepper spray, the tear gas canisters, and rubber bullets if the first two (2) does not work to disband these protests and they are destroying businesses.

The POTUS was correct in getting out the troops to protect the businesses and government buildings.

It seems like they were waiting to get at President Trump and they have failed at their protests, big time.

In 1967, Detroit, President Johnson sent in the Army’s 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. The result was 43 dead, 1,189 injured, over 7,200 arrests, and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed.
...........
My brother was one of them, an MP. He manned a .50 cal, they used recoilless rifles also. They free fired at will.
