Attorney General William Barr appointed a federal prosecutor to review so-called unmasking requests that Obama administration officials submitted against Trump associates, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department said Wednesday.
Kerri Kupec, the Justice Department spokeswoman, said on Fox News that Barr appointed John Bash, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, to conduct the review.
Bash will carry out the probe in coordination with U.S. attorneys John Durham and Jeff Jensen, who are looking into various aspects of the Trump-Russia investigation.
The attorney general determined that certain aspects of unmasking needed to be reviewed separately as a support to John Durhams investigation, Kupec told Fox News Sean Hannity.
On May 13, Republican senators released a list of 39 Obama-era government officials who submitted requests for intelligence reports during the presidential transition period that identified Flynn, the incoming national security adviser. The documents showed that former Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan and other officials in the Obama administration submitted requests for information regarding Flynn.
Kupec said that while the process of unmasking is not inherently wrong, Barr is analyzing whether Obama officials had political motives in submitting requests for reports that identified Flynn.
The motivation and the reasoning behind unmasking can be problematic, she said.
When you are looking at unmasking as part of a broader investigation like John Durhams investigation, looking specifically at who was unmasking whom can add a lot to our understanding about motivation and big picture events.

Ya but once rats hear about this some may start singing
I think that was Huber. But Barr’s no Sessions...not even close.
Why does it seem like every month the investigations are just getting started?
“”I forgot the name of the guy from Utah”
John Huber.”
Probably someone the deep state could count on. Poor ole Jeff Sessions was in way over his head.
Unfortunately, I have to agree. 👎
Running out the clock.
Bagpipe Bill ought to know that walking in the door. 'Political motives', indeed.
I tried to give Sessions the benefit of the doubt for a while, but then it just got too crazy. The one thing I could never forgive him for was not telling the President his plans to recuse himself before he did it. That was an unforgivable act. I can’t believe the man wasn’t aware of what a bad move that was on all levels. Here you’re appointed to the highest office in the DOJ, and you don’t even realize the importance of discussing your intentions with the man who put you there? No class or smarts whatsoever. And now he wants people to believe he saved Trump’s behind? That makes his past behavior even worse.
I’m suspicious of this. Every time someone else gets appointed to ‘review’ this, it pushes the outcome closer and closer to the Nov election.
We need indictments yesterday.
They can’t take the risk of revealing that both parties colluded to violate the Constitution.
Obama is not a natural born citizen and they all knew it.
Proof of that is the Senate resolution for McCain that stated what made him a natural born citizen was his TWO citizen parents.
Obama’s foreign father made him a foreigner at birth even if born here.
Ah take your time.
In fact, get back to us when the Kennedy assassination is fully released...
You got that right. From Judicial Watch :
On May 15, 2017, Public Affairs Specialist Marsha Murphy sends Rosenstein an email with the subject line Eric Holder just called for you. The message says: Please call him.
On May 16, 2017, U.S. Attorney John Huber wrote to Rosenstein: Rod, Were proud of you. Later that year, Huber was chosen by then-Attorney General Sessions to head up the Clinton Foundation investigation.
(On May 17, 2017, Robert Mueller was appointed by Rosenstein as special counsel.)
Oh, dear. If they’re depending on proving “motive”, though we all know what it is, I would think that it’s pretty hard to prove.
I am still waiting for anyone to be charged with crimes.
Im suspicious of this. Every time someone else gets appointed to review this, it pushes the outcome closer and closer to the Nov election.

Correct. There is nothing here that Barr couldn’t have done a year ago. Instead, he let Horowitz slow walk his IG report and punted Durham to the summer. That contrasted to the speed the ongoing coup moves at could not be more stark.
This is obviously late, but the man named shows tremendous promise...

In 2003, Bash graduated from Harvard College, where he was a staff writer for the Harvard Crimson. In 2006 he received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. After law school, Bash clerked for Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court during the 2007-2008 Term, and earlier for Brett Kavanaugh of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
From 2012 to 2017, Bash was an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the United States Department of Justice. In that role, he argued ten cases on behalf of the United States before the Supreme Court of the United States. From 2017 to 2018, he was a special assistant and associate counsel to U.S. President Donald Trump.
In my opinion this Obamagate stuff is nearing red herring territory. It’s just a well planned snipe hunt distraction from the ongoing coup. What is far more important is what has happened while Trump is POTUS. The coupists and their GOP enablers need to be brought to account and that is just not happening.
