Exodus from NYC: The young join the rich in ditching the Big Apple as the coronavirus economic downturn drives professionals out and companies accept staff permanently working from home

Young people are joining the rich and are fleeing New York for the suburbs after the coronavirus lockdown left many professionals reconsidering city life as companies begin to permanently adopt work-from-home models.

As COVID-19 gripped the country in mid March, residents of New York City's wealthiest neighborhoods fled to ride out the lockdown at their vacation homes, while many young people hunkered down in the suburbs with their parents.

Some were forced to break their leases and move back to their hometowns because they could no longer afford the city's exorbitant rent prices after losing their jobs, while others have continued paying for their cramped city apartments while they shelter elsewhere.

If you have money, it’s a great buying opportunity to purchase property in Manhattan.

Yes, the apartment price will drop from $3.8 million to $3.4 million.

I am a huge fan of distribution of wealth. So, if one outcome of all this stupidity is people moving out of big cities and taking their tax money to smaller cities, towns or even the country, that is a good outcome.

An empty NYC is a tinder box.
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

4And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. 5For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 6Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. 7How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. 8Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

9And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

11And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: 12

London went through a Plague many times and bounced back each time. Even if it takes a decade or two, inevitably New York will be back at the top.

I agree that great cities in the past survived many crisis (including the plague) and returned to greatness.

But I think the reason they did is because the purpose of having a city where it is remained.

Today in the digital age what is the purpose of New York?

New York has a harbor, but so do other places.

Retail stores (and services) go where the people are, and people go where there are jobs.

It is possible for individuals to work from almost anywhere, there home or satellite offices.

Detroit is a failed city because the reason Detroit existed went away. New York is not all that special, it too could become a failed wasteland.

Buying opportunity for what, exactly? A suite on the Titanic? NYC is going to be a diminished and grossly over-taxed place for years to come.

This may be what finally pushes NYC over the edge. Their tax revenues won't be able to support their massive welfare system and public employees. They won't be able to cut back and still remain a Democrat stronghold.

The Dem politicians won't be able to change, they will stall the inevitable until it cannot be delayed. The bankruptcy will be beyond massive.

New York was a great city, because it maintained a “critical mass” of coolness.

There were a large number of very wealthy people who liked NYC because of all the amenities, the shops, the entertainment, the opportunities to mingle and party with other members of the Elite.

The longer this lockdown lasts, the more the Elites who sustained the city will disperse elsewhere.

They still have to be in proximity to NYC. So now they are bringing their destructive politics to the nearby suburbs.

My son worked in Boston until the pandemic hit. His company will not return even though they just moved in to new headquarters. They feel they’re saving money having everyone work remotely. My son is good with that. He lives in a great suburban community on the ocean and he’s going to save a good deal of money not having to commute. On top of that he said he now gets to see more of the kids and have dinner with the family every night.
