SMITHFIELD - Again - this time in Los Angeles

Over 100 workers at L.A. meat processing plant test positive
More than 100 workers at a Los Angeles-area meat plant that makes the famous Dodger hot dogs have tested positive for the coronavirus.
At least 116 people at the Smithfield Foods-owned Farmer John processing plant have been infected, according to the Los Angeles County public health department. Local media reports put the estimate closer to 140 people, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Smithfield, which bought Farmer John in 2017, could not be reached for comment.

US daily new cases look to me to have leveled off, or maybe even increased slightly the last 2 weeks. Some of that is increased testing:

(Scroll to: “Testing and New Case Figures”)

All things considered, I believe a conservative estimate would be to expect, on average, 1k US fatalities per day, through the summer. That’s a rather grim number.

My son works at a catering place. They were pretty much shut down for a couple of months. The owner got into the meal kit thing and now has three workers (including my son) packing meals. More workers will be coming back next week.

It is a learning process though to get into a slightly different venture.

You’re right about Messico if the influx of expats coming over into El Centro hospitals is any indication. And they’re already complaining about their own nationals returning; Tijuana being the second-largest hotspot. What is with these countries who don’t want to take their own citizens back?

I believe that businesses that adapted like this will come survive. The ones that ones who are more reactive, are just trying to wait it out, are the ones taking a big hit.

There are jobs out there too, if people are willing to do them. I had a neighbor say her son was struggling, out of work. I told her my son’s company is hiring, good pay, but hard work. She said he was waiting for a management job, that he doesn’t do physical work. And he’s early 30s, fit.

That’s just crazy to me, you do what you have to in times like these.

We had enough at home not to have to go out last night. Much better than grocery bought frozen corn dogs.

Haven't smelled anyone's bbq this year. There are no briskets to be found at the store.

I may have to experiment with that corn dog recipe.
I know some people who would enjoy those.
“Hot-Diggity-Dog!” They would say.

I thought everyone was dead broke and had no money to feed their starving kids.

Meal kits are “$5.50 to $7.50 per serving.” Uh, helloooo. I posted way back about taking the kits’ online ingredient lists and making those meals with my own ingredients. Not rocket science. My copy cat meals were between $1-$2 each. In fact, the food budget here has long been $5 per person per day.

But, to answer the question, yes, people are lazy and will continue to purchase these kits along with their prepacked junk food. Just like they buy McD’s chicken nuggets every other day and wonder why their kids are fat.

The homemade super simple no brainer corn dog muffins from #72 above came to $1.75 for 57 mini muffins. Compare that to Walmart Great Value brand at $2.18 for just 16 minis. OK, these are fattening but it’s a holiday and the leftovers went into the freezer for July 4 so not an everyday thing.

Off to see if the homemade yogurt has cooled enough to jar up.

Then there’s the problem with it mutating. Just because the person may have antibodies for one strain, doesn’t mean they have them for the other dozen strains. That’s why flu vaccines fail so many years.

Convenient, cheap and you get to try it out before, well, you know.

Good link on Georgia re-opening.

“Re-opening” is not the magic bullet some think it is.

This will be a long slow slug until most folks believe the virus is either under control or has mostly run its course.

Calling folks names (often seen here on FR) won’t encourage them to get back to normal, it will just convince them there are a lot of crazy people out there that need to be avoided.

Very rarely does meal prep here take more than half an hour a day. That’s for dinner. Otherwise it’s nuke or eat cold leftovers. It would take half an hour to drive to McD’s, sit in line, and another half hour to drive home. Hour minimum. No thanks. That’s double my time.

Cost wise, well, that’s proven above.
