The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Friday that William Bryan, the neighbor who filmed Ahmaud Arbery's death, was not a good Samaritan or simply a witness as Bryan has claimed, but a significant player in the February killing of the unarmed black man.

"If we believed he was a witness, we wouldn't have arrested him," GBI Director Vic Reynolds said Friday. "There's probable cause and we're comfortable with that."

Bryan, who filmed the four-minute chase and shooting death of Arbery, was arrested Thursday evening.

The 50-year-old was taken into custody and charged with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. Two other men, Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, allegedly went after Arbery, trapped and shot him four times. They were arrested on charges of felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment earlier this month.

Bryan, who is white, recorded the Feb. 23 confrontation as the McMichaels – who are also white – pursued Arbery while he was running through the Satilla Shores neighborhood, about 25 minutes away from downtown Brunswick.

"We don't go into a situation of this nature investigating a person or persons, we go in and investigate a set of facts and once we start turning stones over — sometimes there's one or two stones underneath that need to be turned over," Reynolds said.

In Georgia, a person can be charged with felony murder if he or she is alleged to have contributed to another person's death, even unintentionally, while committing another felony.

Reynolds also said that state investigators had found "a number of pieces of video" that linked Bryan to the case.

It seems to me that the neighbors had Arbery pretty well pegged as the suspected burglar and the smart thing to do was just keep recording him, with dates and times, and give copies of the recordings to the police for them to take action. Attempting a citizens’ arrest on flaky information and doing it while armed was just plain dumb and led to one dead man plus three who’ve had their lives ruined for being a bit too quick on the trigger.

Looked to me like he stayed in his truck filming- I didn’t see him get out, nor did i hear a gun go off in his cab- His truck was also a ways back from the other truck in front- so no- he wasn’t ‘blocking the dude in preventing him from escaping’ - the dude on foot had all kinds of routes he could have taken- yet he chose to run at and attack the son- stupid move- The only shots fired were from the son’s gun which was being yanked on by the dude as he was pounding the rap out of the son

Georgia law only states that a person has to know about a crime- The dude was trespassing- a crime- they are allowed at that point to confront him- likely for questioning- which appears is what they tried to do- The dude rushed and attacked- turning what likely was going to be just a questioning into a deadly confrontation

The details will be hammered out in court- I suspect though that the left is turning this into a racial issue claiming two white rednecks decided to hunt down and murder a black man simply because he was i n their neighborhood

Anyways- exactly- These weren’t - in my opinion, two white rednecks out to murder a black man for ‘trespassing’ in their neighborhood- They had ample evidence that this kid was very likely casing the house- he’d been seen several times before on camera- etc- I suspect they were going to question the kid- ask him why he was seen going in and coming out- ask him why he was seen on camera at night, in that same building a couple of times before- then hold him till police got there- and fill out a complaint at that point- They also feared he might be armed- which is not unreasonable at all when you suspect someone is casing houses in the neighborhood- AND you know personally, have first hand knowledge, that this same fella brought a loaded gun into a high school where he was not a student, dropped it on the floor- then took off running-
