With more than 1 million unemployment claims, L.A. County’s economy takes a ‘sobering’ hit...

With more than 1 million unemployment claims, the Los Angeles County economy has taken a devastating hit with most layoffs among lower-income jobs, officials said Wednesday.

An economic task force made up of county officials and leaders from 13 different industries met Tuesday and revealed how they have been impacted by months of closures due to COVID-19.

“It was sobering,” L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said.

The restaurant industry has seen 80% of jobs lost, and 890,000 people in the film and entertainment employees are not working, according to Barger. Among the more 1 million who faced layoffs, over 75% earned an average annual salary of less than $50,000 a year, Barger said, citing data from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.

“Economic impacts created by COVID-19 have hurt our most vulnerable populations,” Barger said. “The most prolonged closure means that many small businesses may not be able to reopen and will cause permanent job losses for millions throughout this county.”

But the economic task force has set a goal to reopen higher-risk settings like restaurants and malls to customers by July 4, something health officials still need to sign off on. Barger said the industry experts on the task force will deliver reports on progress by June 30.

Local officials continue to take a cautious approach.

I am glad that public officials realize how bad the economy is in LA County...

Come on...End the shutdown...Don't just say that you are unhappy...July 4...Not fast enough...

End the shutdown before it is really too late...The county supervisor does admit that some businesses will not reopen...

No bailouts. Government employees should be unemployed too. Most are very non-essential.

Well they can take solace in the “moral superiority” they so proudly virtue-signal, as a “sanctuary city.”

I don;t think most restaurants are going to make it,even as they open...50 to 25 % capacity isn’t going to cut it and pay their bills....

Exactly... “sobering” says to me that they’ll re-evaluate their life choices... in this case they’ll just double down on stupid (orange man bad)

The DemocRATS’ consider over a million unemployment claims a positive thing. With the $600 weekly supplement to the unemployment checks, that’s OVER $600 MILLION PER WEEK of FEDERAL DOLLARS coming into that county.

Staying closed into July will kill whatever is left of the small business in LA.

“890,000 people in the film and entertainment employees are not working,”

lol, a number of us are ready to work. It’s just a good number of us are getting paid to stay home anyway and these clowns dont actually factor in the $600/week is actually NOT a liability because you have disposable income. Not only that unions and guilds pay in addition.

Well, more important than any particular language skill or talent his having a compliant, low-cost employee.

After all, coding is just a utility function. Any drone with minimal social skills and poor personal hygiene can be swapped in and deliver the same results. /s

So the wife and I are stopped at a red light in front of Estes Park library. I look over at a beautiful statue of a huge Elk sitting in the yard there about 15 feet away.
Suddenly the big beautiful bad ass moves its head towards me and winks. Then gets up. NO statue, that baby was real.
Oh my.
Anyway 80 percent of gub mint workers are worthless and do non necessary crap.
Just saying.

Right. People tend to continue along the lines of behavior for which they are rewarded, someone said. So handing out US taxpayer bailouts to corrupt and socialist reckless overspenders in CA and NY or NJ lets them say "Ah, thank goodness for the bailout. Now we can increase socialist spending again."

Should I mention the rapid transit rail line to nowhere that CA finally dropped? Or money to illegal aliens?

Remember the silly projects to waste money? Study of owl spit in the forest. (Because if owl spit contains little bones of rodents and tree bark it means the ecology is declining and the owls are desperate for food sources. NOT a joke.) And study of why girls end up rejecting taking mathematics and science due to attitudes of boys toward them and other factors. So important./s And millions of dollars went to them.
